stge 3 kidney failure

Should I drink 80 ounces of water daily to improve stage 3 renal failure or may I drink Green tea and cranberry juice as a substitute for some of the water?

@sherryann75 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Is your doctor telling you 80 ounces of fluid a day? If so, that fluid would consist of anything that is fluid at room temperature. For example, coffee, tea, water, juices, pudding, ice cream.

I have been through the stage you're in right now, and I drank as much water as I could until I had to go on fluid restriction. All liquids count, but my doctor stressed the importance of plain water. I was in stage 3 for 15 years, and then progressed rapidly to ESRD. Good luck, and remember to always keep trying.

Thank you for the info. I will increase my water intake. Just do not like the taste of water. I am trying very hard to do what is best.

Thanks Ginger. That helps a lot. I do not like water but I can drink some daily.

I put a little juice in the water. And seltzer with juice quenches my thirst better! It also helps me to have water at room temperature, not chilled.

3a CKD here 🙂
Nephrologist tells me to steer clear of anything with too much sugar or salts (like cola and sports drinks - they contain electrolytes) because the selectivity of eliminating different elements (potassium, sodium, etc) is different for different types or renal failure, and my kidneys have problems dealing with certain electrolytes (eliminates too much of one, and retains the other - the kidney biopsy was done on Tuesday 28th November so I’ll get the definitive ‘what to drink’ when I go back and he tells me exactly what form of renal failure I have..however I had an ultrasound on kidneys on 30th November and the left one was looking terrible - I’m no sonographer but it was plain to see it wasn’t a smooth looking consistency. The sample was taken from the left, so hopefully they have some answers as to why 3a has developed in the last 8 months).
Anyway, my nephrologist says 2.5 litres for me minimum (considering I’m 5’11”; apparently size does matter!) of water, steer clear of carbonated anything besides naturally bubbly spring water, don’t have too much coffee/tea, and drink pomegranate and cranberry juice diluted with water.
To get around the boring taste of water, if not adding pomegranate/cranberry juice, I put a naturally flavoured tea bag with rosehip and strawberry bits in a bottle and steep in room temp water - it’s lovely. I buy Twinings strawberry and raspberry tea bags (it’s actually no ‘tea’ - just rosehip, strawberry and raspberry).
Despite what the nephrologist says, I have drenching night sweats, so to avoid crippling cramping and heart rate changes due to imbalance of electrolytes, I do have hydralyte or Sierra fit electrolyte drinks (powder, so I can control the concentration), and how I test this is: make up a bottle of electrolytes with water, sip it..if it tastes ‘salty’ and a little unpleasant, that means I do not need more electrolytes. But, if it tastes a little sweet, and very pleasant, I’m low on electrolytes and I drink 500ml twice that day…I kind of let my body tell me what it needs in terms of electrolytes, and this is kind of using a taste/crave method.
Drinking cold liquids means the body has to heat them to body temp before being able to absorb them (delaying hydration), and so I drink water at least room temp or just above.
I also taper the water intake over the day: drink more in the morning, and taper that to smaller amounts in the evening, because I find that after resting overnight, the kidneys work a bit better in the morning so I give them the flushing through task first thing, and less to do in the evening - this has improved the amount of swelling I have in my hands and legs at the end of the day, as well as reduces the amount of times I get up to urinate during the night. Check with your nephrologist, but at least there’s other tricks and tips here that you can ask them about.
Practical things, I hope they’re helpful 🙂

@sherryann75 One of the best things I found is True Lemon, True Lime or True Orange. This is crystallized amounts of these, in foil packet, that you can add to water. Gives you "just enough" taste to not be plain water. I especially like the True Orange, as orange juice is on my no-no list due to the potassium!
