Starting Forteo/teriparatide

Posted by vinnyv @vinnyv, Sep 11, 2024

Starting this drug in the next week. Thinking about taking it in the late afternoon/early evening. Hoping to sleep off/thru any side effects. Any comments/recommendations on a this approach? Thanks!

@lkel

I bought a surgical "pen" and marked 6 dots on each side of my abdomen. I would alternate
Left abdomen side, left 1 dot side
left, left 3
left, left 5

then

right abdomen side, right 1 dot side
right, right 3
right, right 5

Then
left, right 1
left, right 3

and so one until I had done 24 separate sites. Then start over again.

Great idea, thank you for sharing!

Update: Although I started in the evening, I'm taking mine in the morning before work. Just easier to get it out of the way. Rotate in a circle from rt abdomen, lf abdomen, lf thigh, rt thigh, repeat. No issues.

@broken13

May I ask what you are taking in follow up to Forteo?

They are recommending Reclast. My understanding is so I won't lose the benefits of taking Forteo. I only agreed to a 12 month timeframe for Forteo. I haven't quite decided on the Reclast. I need to do some research on it.

I have been researching Reclast as well as Forteo and I am very wary of the osteocronosis as well as the risk of breaking my femur. I am going to choose Forteo instead of Reclast because;
1. I have seen the blogs on this site of people taking Reclast and its very strong and there is no turning back once it is in your system. if a person has a severe reaction there is not much you can do.
2. Forteos's side effects are less severe;
-joint pain 16%
-Flu-like symptoms 14%
-Hot flashes 10%
-Bronchitis 10%
-Runny nose 10%
and other side effects under 10% including Diarrhea and swelling in arms and legs.
Reclast does have similar side effects except it also has serious side effects such as osteocronosis, femur fracture, and severe kidney problems. Although those severe side effects are rare-it scares me even having a chance of it happening.

I'm not switching to Reclast. It's something they want me to take once at the end of my Forteo run in October '25. Like you, I've heard some negative things about Reclast. Going to weigh the +/- of it and decide then.

So far so good everyone. I am starting out slow (Drs advice after I was so sick on TYMLOS) and injecting every other day. So far so good. I have done well. Slightly dizzy but not nauseous or bad headaches. Keep in mind I take an anti nauseous OTC pill a half hour before plus ginger chews.

I feel what has helped me the most is to make sure I really hydrate all day.

Thanks for the great feedback after I first posted. In about a week I will try to start injecting every day.

In response to @vinnyv

I just started Forteo last week. Alternating every other day upon my endocrinologist advised since I was sick on TYMLOS. I also inject at night so I can sleep through most of the side effects. Hydration is the key. I have a feeling I was sick on TYMLOS because of the large calcium dump it did and from what I read that can also cause a person to feel nausea of cause headaches. So try to drink a lot of water to flush that calcium dump out.
