Starting Forteo/teriparatide

Posted by vinnyv @vinnyv, Sep 11, 2024

Starting this drug in the next week. Thinking about taking it in the late afternoon/early evening. Hoping to sleep off/thru any side effects. Any comments/recommendations on a this approach? Thanks!

Hi @strongerbones Forteo pen is not adjustable. I tried with a used Forteo pen with leftover doses once.

When you load the pen with a dose, you could hear numerous clicks, however you could only load with a full dose in order to deliver a dose.

As you deliver a dose by pushing the plunger, you could also hear many clicks, but they are not calibrated to any corresponding fractional doses.

Every other day dosing with Forteo is a strategy some endos use for people who are sensitive to this drug. Hope you get adjusted to it in no time!

Adding on to confirm that you can't adjust the dose. I once discovered I completely missed a dose by not pulling the plunger out completely until I saw the red line. When I injected myself, no medication was injected. I didn't discover this until the next day and thought my pen was defective. The insert mentions this issue and how to reset the pen.

I started taking the teriparatide injections a month ago, all is well so far. I do it in the morning when I take vitamins and other medications.
This morning I had a red ring around the injection site. This was a first and I’m wondering if this is something I should be concerned about?

I often have bruising from my teriparatide injection or a red ring around the injection side. This usually fades in a day.

It also stings when I inject whereas Tymlos did not.

It does make it easier to rotate the injection sites because I can clearly see where I injected the previous day.

I took it first thing in the morning. I had no side effects after the first 2 weeks. Thee side effects I did have were minimal. I finished up 11 months ago. I chose morning because I wanted to have my day clear for the rest of the day.

May I ask what you are taking in follow up to Forteo?

Thanks so much and what you expressed is exactly what the pharmacist told me. I’m starting next week. I am hoping I will do well. I appreciate the input you gave me.

Good luck to you as you start your Forteo journey. I am on month 5 of Forteo and everything's been fine.
I inject before bed and only had minor side effects the first day or two (mild headache, body sluggish).
I also had bruising at injection sites on upper thighs and after reading tips on this blog, I've improved much. One of the big things seems to be injecting at the 90 degree angle, as instructed. At first I found that a little difficult in my thigh area but I've gotten better and so has the bruising. I do rotate through the 4 sites, abdomen and upper thigh.
Wishing you success!

I was on Tymlos for five months. I would still be on it if insurance didn't change. Doctor now wants me to start Forteo/teriparatide so I will be starting that soon. I've been nervous about starting a new drug. I had good luck on Tymlos (my first and only osteo drug) so I hope I do well with Forteo too. I plan to take it at night since that is what I did with Tymlos. I had the same idea - sleep through any side effects. Plus, I'm too rushed in the morning before work to deal with it then. Here we go - good luck to both of us 🙂

It happened to me occasionally. I don't think it's a issue.

I bought a surgical "pen" and marked 6 dots on each side of my abdomen. I would alternate
Left abdomen side, left 1 dot side
left, left 3
left, left 5

then

right abdomen side, right 1 dot side
right, right 3
right, right 5

Then
left, right 1
left, right 3

and so one until I had done 24 separate sites. Then start over again.
