Starting Big 3.. suggestions on how to take them.

Posted by wabashacabin @wabashacabin, Jan 29 8:05pm

I will start treatment in a few days. Looking for information on how to take the 3 meds and suggestions to get through this.
Very frightened to start this.
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards
Bonnie

Wow, every MAC doctor prescribes differently for these 3 meds.
Mine is:
Week 1: Ethambutol - in morning - no food for an hour.
Week 2: Add Rifampin - same timing- morning and no food for an hour.
Week 3: Add the Azithromycin - with food at any time of the day.
So interesting the variation. I'm only on day one of the Rifampin so I, too am at the beginning of this process (54 y.o., no symptoms but diagnostic imaging + broncoscopy biopsies' pathology = treatment). I posted already but ethambutol took 4-5 days adjustment - had headaches that went away finally. I'm worried about my gut with the rifampin... Good luck.

Good luck to you also. I will start Sun, 3x a week. My doc said to do all at once, so I guess I'll give it a try like that. We need to stay positive and believe we can do this! God bless 🙏❤️

Hello Bonnie. I am going into 3rd month now on the Big3. Very few side affects so far other than slight headaches early in and a bit of nausea but that too has gone away. I take all 5 pills every morning on an empty stomach and this works for me. Do what works best for you. I however was taking yogurt every morning for a probiotic but understand shouldn’t have any dairy? So if anyone knows anything interested to hear about it.
This is a great forum and I am fairly new to this as well amd find the support, positivness, suggestions etc. have really helped me already.
I am slowly seeing some results, exercise is key for me as seems to help with some of the fatigue.

Thank you for your response. Are you saying no dairy with the Rifampin or no dairy while on treatment?
I do appreciate your information. I'm scared but, I know I can do this.
I pray for all who are dealing with this disease.
Kind regards
Bonnie

Would they let you eat yogurt for your gut? Ask them, it helps me with nausea 😵 I hate to think of starting the cocktail. 70 y.o.

I think they mean no dairy within an hour or two of taking the pills. I eat yogurt in the AM and take pills in the PM. Good luck.

My sister in law is a dr of pharmacy
And she confirmed no dairy within an hour or two between taking medication, so cleared that up. I was baffled as well when I heard that as we need it for our gut while on these medications. I feel better too now.

I'm 77 and could have gone the rest of my life without having to deal with this. Starting at 52 have had 3 hip replacements, two knee replacements, a shattered femur between my hip and knee from a fall. Now a plate and screws from below knee and up to hip.
Breast cancer survivor, and multitudes of other surgeries.
I'm not sure how I have been given so much, but I do know God had been by my side through it all and is still here for this one.
Life is still good and I'm grateful for all He has brought me through ♥️

With yogurt being such a healthy probiotic it should help a little with Nausea I would think? But then again wait an hour or two. My nausea completely subsided shortly after first month on the meds. In my 3rd month now absolutely no side affects …. Hope it continues.
