Stage 3B -CKD-Cysts on the Kidneys-Doctor Didn't Seem Concerned

Posted by sultanvr @sultanvr, Oct 18 2:53pm

Hello,
In March 2024 in response to a test which showed his EFGR at 43, his family doctor ordered an ultrasound on his kidneys.
In the findings they found various size cysts on both kidneys as well as a tumor on his adrenal gland. They shared that it was a benign tumor.
The doctor did not seen concerned about either and shared that he did not think that either would affect my husbands kidney health.
He did nothing at that time, but prescribe a diurectic which I later looked up and found that it can have adverse effects on ones kidneys.
1.) Has anyone had cysts or tumors and was told not to worry? Just curious.
After not feeling like our family doctor was treating my husband well, I asked for a referral to a Nephorologist, which our appointment is coming up in the next couple of week.
Thank you.

@sultanvr I had a small mass on my right kidney several years ago. It turned out to be cancerous. My urologist sent me to a interventional radiologist as an outpatient painless procedure. He performed at a local hospital a cryoablation which means he "froze" the cancerous mass that would later dissipate. I took X rays for the first 5 years and was and remain cancer free. I urge you to see an interventional radiologist. This had for me no effect on my eGFR.

Thank you! I so appreciate your sharing with me.

I had successful Cryoablation as well. My second scan showed some small, bilateral benign cysts. My doctor, too, is not concerned. Next scan in January.

I had a kidney removed this past January because of a 4cm growth that was found. Pathology report after surgery showed that it was non-cancerous, however, I am minus one kidney. My remaining kidney has a cyst. My remaining kidney is working at 35%. Stage 3b CKD. Fortunately I feel good, I exercise, eat healthfully and pray. It is interesting to note that each of us could be told something different about our “conditions”, however, we all try to do our best with the information we have. Blessings.

It is my understanding that your kidneys do decline in function capacity as we age. Possibly some online research and another visit with your doctor will help you manage this. Dr Google can help you understand things from a general perspective but it is not a replacement for your doctor who knows you and your other issues that need to be considered. If you do discuss what you have read with your doctor, please preference comments with something like, Help me understand . . . or I know Dr Google is not the end all, be all, however he told me . . .
You may want to know your care plan so you can be a full participant as well as possible options when and if the decline increases. Ask if you want to know these things.

Appreciate you sharing. It has been helpful hearing other people's experiences. I'm sorry that you had to find out that the growth was non-cancerous in the way that you find out, but the blessing there is it wasn't cancer. I am glad to hear that you are feeling good and sound optimistic. Blessings to you as well.

I can share you my experience. I was recently at Mayo a couple weeks ago from my work up but I go back next week.

I did get all of my labs and scans back and anything that concerned me. Such as small cysts, which is abnormal for me because I have a chronic kidney disease that forms bilateral kidney stones very rapidly. I was quite concerned because I've never seen any cysts show up before. I contacted my own nephrologist and He said to me that cysts are very common and typically nothing to worry about. I can only give you my experience based on the specific kidney disease I have.

I hope it helps!
