Stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD): What specialists do I see?

Posted by rozalia @rozalia, Aug 24, 2016

My primary says I do not need to see a kidney specialist. Is this true. My blood chems are ok.

I was just diagnosed a few hours ago… My doctor was always complaining that I was just dehydrated!
Where can I find a beginners book on what is healthy for me to eat for my kidney disease? I’m devastated, but I know knowledge is power.

I bought The Renal Diet Cookbook For The Newly Diagnosed by Susan Zogheib. I got it on Amazon. She starts the book with education about renal disease.

I have either stage 3a CKD or AKI (acute kidney injury, maybe from norovirus last year). I have no risk factors for CKD, but just having proteinuria is enough to have treatment with a nephrologist to lessen the chance of CKD progression and cardiovascular damage. ACE II didn't work for me due to side effects, but trying Jardiance (sglt2 inhibitor). If someone has stage 3a it is mostly drinking enough water and meds that help control proteinuria. With stage 3b there are significant dietary and other changes.

Regardless of what your primary says I would do a self referral to a nephrologist!

I have CDK which occurred due to a Family Practice physician missing hallmark signs/symptoms of hyper-parathyroid disease resulting in CDK of 3a. I drink a fair amount of water, am not taking any medications and follow-up with the Nephrologist about every 6 months with lab work. This happened in 2022, so far, thank goodness, I have been stable and my lab values look good. Not experienced alot of itching except for what come naturally with weather and aging.
