Stage 1 Melanoma - Castle BioScience result 2A

Posted by sis1965 @sis1965, Sep 20 7:27am

I am wondering what preventative treatments would be recommended after having stage 1 melanoma and Castle Bioscience result 2A (high reoccurrence)?
The tumor was surgically removed, however no lymph nodes were taken out and the lesion was unulcerated.
Thanks for any advice on preventative treatments to reduce reoccurrence.

@sis1965: Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. There can be a lot of information to be found about melanoma on the intenet; unfortunately it can be overwhelming, scary, outdated and confusing. Here you can find up to date and factual documentation as well as support and guidance from many of us who have been in your shoes.

I was also treated for stage 1 and had a Castle assessment of 1A back in the early days of such screening. Surgical removal is key. Castle Testing helps to strasify risk so those in the "A" category are generally assigned to the lower risk, while the "2" designation is associated with higher risk for squamous cell carcinoma or cutaneous carcinoma. Therefore, as you indicate, ongoing preventative measures are very important.

First, it helps to understand the causes and identification of melanoma, explained here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/melanoma/symptoms-causes/syc-20374884

Secondly, there are several helpful preventative measures, as outlined here: https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/simple-steps-to-prevent-skin-cancer

For those of us who have had a history of melanoma, frequent skin checks as advised by a dermatologist are important to follow: those we perform on ourselves and those performed on a regular by the medical provider. There are new advances that have been made in skin cancer detection, such as whole body photography that have been shown to identify concerning changes much earlier. Have you asked your doctor about devices such as the DermaSensor or Vecta imaging?
