Diagnosis squamous cell carcinoma: Worried about wait time for Mohs

Can you have this done at another facility with a shorter wait time?

Most skin cancers are slow growing. The biggest danger is that they will continue to grow and invade muscles and bones (per my dermatologist). The common skin cancers BCC, and SCC, are normally slow growing but that is not saying they all are.

MOHS surgeons are highly trained cancer surgeons. I believe I was told at Mayo Jacksonville there were only two when I had my last MOHS. So I too had a long wait. I think since then they have added MOHS surgeons.

Keep being the squeaky wheel and call the scheduling. I cannot tell you how many times I was trying to get an earlier appointment at Mayo and talking to the scheduler and hear, "Oh an appointment just got cancelled and I can give you that opening." In other words don't want for them to call, call them.

I understand that in different regions it may be difficult to get in with a medical provider to treat cases such as yours - where a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has been diagnosed having characteristics of one of the more fast growing in nature. While it may be associated with low risk for metastasis - or spread to other parts of the body - it's generally best to have it treated sooner rather than later. I would second the recommendations to be your own advocate in seeking more prompt treatment, either with another provider or calling frequently for a cancellation to be seen sooner.

Thank you for your support with my diagnosis of SCC and challenging prompt medical treatment needed. I was able to get an appointment with a dermatologist group for a consultation and possible early Mohs surgery. I will keep you posted

@carisma, any update? Were you able to get an earlier appointment? How are you doing?

Yes, I’m on the mend ❤️‍🩹 last Monday the Mohs surgery was done, 30 stitches 6 hours. I have a pressure bandage on and was replaced on this Monday and the outer stitches look great. I’m so relieved 😌

@carisma: What a relief to hear that this was taken care of so much sooner than the original November date! 30 sutures and 6 hours, pleased with the results - I'm so pleased to hear that you're doing well after all that. Have you gotten any pathology results you feel comfortable sharing? In the event you have any initial scarring, which is likely, keep in mind this fades quite a bit with time. Please let me know from time to time how you're doing.
