Sprain in upper back: Has anyone had a trapezoid sprain?

Has anyone had a trapezoid sprain?

I had shoulder surgery. As a result of being in a sling for 6 weeks, it caused a painful strain in my upper left back (trapezoid muscle). The pain goes into neck and shoulder.
I tried steroid pack but no relief after 3 weeks.
Now trying Physical Therapy.
Just wondering how long this will last. It is more painful than the rotator cuff surgery!

That sounds painful. For my back issues (not a sprain) I had healing therapeutic touch by a gifted acupuncturist and another time dry needling by a physical therapist. Both provided amazing results.

I have right trap spasm that developed in 8/2023. I had a flare 2/24 where it really knotted up (with other muscle groups). I also had centralized pain to center of spine (mid back) that radiated out. I have known nerve problems and issues throughout neck but more prominently in spine around C6+.

Check out nerve dermatomes. They helped me pinpoint nerve dysregulation.

Slings put pressure on the neck area…Do you have neck issues? Or is this sudden and new?

Hope you feel better and get answers soon. I use salon pas…although that doesn’t really work with me. The baclofen helps with Lyrica and tylenol. Meds masking problems. I am in process of getting to bottom of the laundry list of symptoms and their root cause with help from some wonderful people here who are so helpful and encouraging. I wish I could repay the help some way…

Feel better soon.

Thanks.
I’ll ask about dry needles.

Thanks for the info.
You have a lot more issues than I do. I hope you can get some answers.
Doc says my next step is an injection. ( cortisone? Not sure ).

I’ve gotten cortisone shots in my back before and couldn’t tell it at all. It was for a muscle spasm. They helped my frozen shoulders, but that was the only time. Maybe, that’s just me.

Me too.

When I received my shot(s) I called back to ask what shot was given. The person named it, that it was a block, I repeated the question, she told me the name. I don’t recall probably in the corticosteroid family.

Hope it is effective for you!

Feel better.

Was it an epidural or the ‘block’? Did it treat thefrozen shoulders or something else? Did you find it helped inflammation in general? Did it help the spasm? That was what I was hoping for but my doc said it is to treat pain. Not the underlying cause. Of course, I don’t want to get a false sense of security and move in a way I should not when I get the epidural tomorrow…

in reply to @bobstokes11 I have the same problem you describe and use this "thing" called Triggerpoint,"that came from Amazon. It is a hard foam roll that I use on the floor, supporting my neck and rolling back and forth to relieve the pain you described and which I have almost daily. I too have had rotator cuff surgery and can sympathize with your situation. Good luck.

I don’t recall them calling it anything other than cortisone. I don’t recall the word epidural. It was in the muscle in my back. It was in spasm and would not release no matter what treatment we tried….heat, trigger point, muscle relaxers, stretching, Electrical stimulation, etc. Had appealed my request for botox injection with my insurance carrier who denied it initially , when it finally released. We could never determine what caused the stubborn spasm. It hasn’t returned yet….that was many years ago.

The cortisone shots in my shoulders were given by my rheumatologist in the joints. They freed it up so I could participate in physical therapy. I have type 1 diabetes and frozen shoulder isn’t uncommon with us, but the actual cause is unknown.

Right now, I have tennis elbow. ☹️

For me, the cortisone helped inflammation in the joint, but not the soft tissue. I got one in my foot too that did nothing. Total waste. It was not in a joint.

If you are in pain, it’s reasonable to discuss your goals with your doctor, imo. Everyone is different.

I am sorry you are in pain Celia…

Thank you for answering my questions. I appreciate it!

Spasms. Mine are strange. The ones in the back and feet do not go away. Massage and stretching now hurts when it used to help. I don’t understand that.

If anything the pain reduces in the back (the Baclofen helps) but they remind me they are not far away. Mobility takes a hit. The ones in the calves come an go unpredictably, but they are never far either. The body hurts. I have to be patient for care to catch up.

If I move in a particular way, it reminds me to not do that, don’t move that way. I’m starting to get twinges in my arms that is reminiscent of a spasm beginning, but it hasn’t yet.

Once my physical therapy doctor suggested my back spasm might be “guarding”.

Good for you! Fight for coverage and get the medication. I am glad the medication was approved and that helped you! 😀

I’ve not heard of Botox for spasm. I’m so glad the Botox eradicated the spasm. I hope it never returns!!

I didn’t know rheumatologists inject.

I had a shot in the great toe many years ago. The pain that caused was not worth it, It did not help the bunion.

I have a few important doctor appointments to discuss problems, diagnosis, tests and medicine renewals coming up. I will do exactly what you suggest. It is all about goals isn’t it?

Please feel better and take care of yourself. I hope your elbow feels better soon.
