Sneezing & hiccups

Posted by ArtVanBuren @cmodling, Aug 17 11:20am

Hello all,
Since my sleeve surgery 5 or 6 years ago I’ve developed a new quirk. When I eat and get full I will either start sneezing (like 6 or 7 times) or I will start hiccuping. This happens almost every time. I hate the sneezing thing in a resturant as people might think I have a cold I’m passing around. When I mention this I get a blank stare😁. How about y’all ? Does this happen to anyone else?

I have not experience, but did a little research.

Sneezing at the end of a meal could be an allergic reaction to something you ate, it has also been linked to the stomach becoming full and, thus distended. Hiccup's after eating often is related to eating a large meal, drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages.

There is actually a word to descripe the sneezing after meal, "snatiation" , a blending of the words "sneeze" and "satiation" — is defined as an uncontrollable sneezing fit that occurs as a result of stomach expansion from overeating.

There are not many articles published on subject, but did find two helpful articles:

Have you tried eating smaller meals to see if it helps?

Thank you Laurie,
I’m glad to know that it’s related as a byproduct of my sleeve surgery. Full…yes as far as my new stomachs 8oz capacity goes BUT in all these years since the surgery I’ve only overeaten one time and it made me nauseated and I had to pull over and throw up. I still eat only very small amounts and have not stretched my stomached like I’ve heard horror stories of others doing. It looks to me like when I get that 8oz capacity about filled up that triggers most commonly these sneezing fits or secondly the hiccups. That makes sense to me. I know my limits and I seldom approach that 8oz maximum.
Again, thank you for your response.
