Smelly armpits and CKD

Posted by sharlea1313 @sharlea1313, Jul 28 2:31pm

This may sound weird, but for the past two months I have had a really strong chemical smell in my armpits. No amount of washing, perfumed soaps, deodorants, and antiperspirants stop it. It’s always there, even as I get out of the shower. I’ve read that kidney disease can do that, but I’m only stage 3a so I doubt that’s it. I’m very self-conscious about it when I’m around people. My doctor had no explanation (other than his default diagnosis of mental health issues due to PTSD). Has anyone else had this problem?

Applying baking soda first thing in underarms in the shower (so it sits there until rinsing) should help. If not, use Listerine for your mouth. Pour some on a paper towel and rub it all around in circular motions inside the underarm, especially if there is hair. Use the minty-flavored. It will kill the bacteria that causes odor. This may not be your case, but if you are a T2 diabetic, insulin resistant, you're more apt to cultivate bacteria in the damper moist areas of your body.
The skin is the largest organ of the body, known as the "third kidney" so it's possible for waste to come through pores, why not the rest of the body? I'm guessing it's a bacteria overgrowth.
When I eat garbanzo beans, especially with cumin, I have smelled it in my underarms. When I stop eating it, it goes away.
If you'e a 3a eGFR, it's an estimate only. Many things can change this instantly under a variety of circumstances. What they need to do is the "Cystatin-C" test, to get a better clinical feature of your kidney function. I'm a 3a too. Mine fluctuates. It can go from 69 to 80 and back again. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, poor night sleep the night before the test, lots of things. I hope the Listerine or soda works out and you can get a Cystatin-C.

This may be a duplicate msg. I typed one and it disappeared. I think baking soda helped when I tried that before. I bought deodorant with baking soda and it didn’t help. I’ve tried Scope but will try Listerine. Today I will try baking soda again and tomorrow Listerine. I’ve even tried Head & Shoulders shampoo. I’m very self, conscious of the smell. Ugh.
Thank you for the info re GFR. I’m interested to see what it will be at the end of this month. I’m hoping my doctor will refer me to a nephrologist.

I'm 76 and never had an issue with unusual BO in the armpits until this year. I rarely wore deodorant and if I did I used Tom's unscented, a safer one for me because it is preservative free and aluminum free, plus free of my other tested allergens. I have Allergic Contact Dermatitis.
But it stopped working.
I like the suggested idea of baking soda and will try it, but I have found using a 50/50 of 75/25 mixture of vinegar to water splashed on the underarm for a minute in the shower then washing with a safe soap, just lard and lye or an olive oil soap (once again my contact allergies limit deoderant of soaps with a fragrance) can get me through the day or half a day. Sometimes if active or stressed by midday I am forced to wash in wash basin using this vinegar mixture, then soap and scrub with a washcloth.
If I try to just use soap the smell is not gone.
My liver was recently tested and it just was on the border of not being normal, nothing significant.

Thank you for your reply. It’s nice to know I’m not alone with this problem. I will also try vinegar after trying baking soda and Listerine. Smelling like French fries is better than smelling like a high concentrate of onion juice.

Yes, I have had the same problem. My friend (retired nurse) told me to wipe with white vinegar, which I did every day, and it helped tremendously. I hope this helps for you as well. Cuts down the smell. Wendy

I wasn't aware the same thing might have been suggested. I'm surprised it was erased?

Scope, won't cut the mustard (so to speak). It must be Listerine. Do one first, then try the other. If either don't work, do both!

I did the Head & Shoulders trip, it didn't work. I'm in Europe now and there's a PURE ZINC shampoo that I know would work. It's great for acne and other skin bacteria. It's called DHS SHAMPOO. This stuff ROCKS! It's expensive- around 15 dollars a bottle, but a only dab will do ya. I would use this instead of all the others also- if you can't get the DHS, ask for an Rx for Ketoconozole shampoo. It's used for bacterial, psoariatic and candida-type skin bacteria. It's also the family of anti-bacterials which fight sports jock-itch, dandruff and other bacteria-related issues. Works elegantly.

An aside: I don't use deodorant anymore. It may seem unhealthy, but I spray straight cologne into my underarms now. The denatured alcohol kills bacteria. The dryness from the dN alcohol is remedied by the humidity I have been living with here. Uff!

You have quite a few options. I didn't get is you were insulin resistant or diabetic. If you are, either one of these will help. The Keto shampoo is NOT a cortisone-based shampoo, which is good in the case of a glucose thing.

You were on the right track, just add or subtract some of these and let us know how they worked out. The results you should know in a 24-hour span. I understand and hear you. I don't blame you for your concern.

Oh, the message only disappeared because my phone rang and I answered it. Lucky you getting to live in Europe now. That could be a real adventure.

I’m going to look for a similar shampoo here, will ask the pharmacist about it.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. One thing at a time until I find something that works.

Thank you. Someone else mentioned vinegar too and I will try that. I said something about smelling like French fries, but then realized this site is international and people don’t know that lots of Canadians put vinegar on their fries, myself included. A little splash on my fries, a little splash in my pits.

The vinegar odor goes away almost immediately on your skin.

Lots of great ideas here to try. I recommend trying just 1 at a time for about a week. Then try another idea for about a week and so forth. You want to give each idea a fair chance. I wouldn’t mix them at the same time for several reasons:
1) there could be a bad interaction
2) if something works, how do you know what it was?

On the topic of ketoconazole, I believe that is an antifungal (not an antibiotic or antiviral or antibacterial). They are different things to treat different problems. Sadly, sometimes more than one situation happens at one time. That is above most of our pay grades and requires input from a professional medical provider or possibly a pharmacist.

For all you “natural” lovers, things like baking soda, vinegar, salt, citrus fruit, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, ammoni, bleach ..... are old, natural, cleansing (disinfecting, sanitizing) products and can be helpful. BUT even those can be harmful / toxic if mixed.

BE CAREFUL

A quick Google search of reliable medical websites shows that smelly armpits and CKD are a thing. It has to do with how efficiently your kidneys are clearing waste from your body (forgive my wording; biology was never my long suit). Diet and meds can also affect body odor, so it's hard to say. I'd say check with your docs, but if they're not aware of a connection, I'm not sure they'll be much help. Maybe you could ask them to look into that possibility. Good luck!
