Skin problem and blow outs on bag edge

Posted by lrandall51 @lrandall51, Mar 6 11:48am

I am almost 6 months out of surgery. I have a rash around the stomach area where bag adheres to skin. Any suggestions?
Also. My stool seems to collect at the stoma and eventually pushes thru the seal of the bag. Any suggestions? I started using the lubricant and it seems to help. Trying to firm up stool as well. Thank you

@kenc what is the name of the sticky wipe you use. It might be something I could use.
Thanks,

@harrison221 Skin Tac is the name of the sticky wipe I use and trust me, it's incredibly sticky.

As a 12 yr ileostomy patient, I've found it's generally caused by improper wafers vs skin barrier products. Do you have a colostomy or an Ileostomy ??
Is your stoma protruding, flush or recessed ??
A protruding ostomy is absolutely the easiest to take care of, but there are products that work for the flush or recessed type.
I recommend seeing an ostomy professional if your having that much skin rash, as if you don't take care of it, the damage will just continue and become a major problem.
I guess I've been lucky, after trying a couple different products and found the one that works. After all these years, I have no skin irritation or damage.
Also,, how often are you changing the the bag ???
You are allowed 20 a month, so I change mine every 2 days.
No matter what you use, they will always start to seep after after a couple days. Changing them often is necessary to keep healthy skin.

@dennis287
We obviously don't live in the same region, as I have to pay for all my ostomy supplies...and they are costly. Because I live in Ontario Canada, I receive a twice yearly grant from the government to help pay for ostomy-related items, but not all Canadian provinces have this arrangement.

@dennis287 thanks for the advice. I have an colostomy and it’s weird. Typically flush my body pops out at times. I call it my turtle head. I cut my pouches as close to that as possible. I don’t always have a rash but I watch it and change the pouch to avoid problems. Always learning. My supplies are partially covered by my insurance…
Best
