Skin allergy with no itchiness and with reddish and scaly skin
Hi, my mom is 56 years old. She started to have reddish and scaly skin problems all over her body, including her back of elbow. She did not feel any itchiness. She also have a lots of dandruff. It all started to show every time she doesn’t have enough sleep and when she gets stressed. She also done to have dermatologists check ups from 2 different clinics, yet it gets worse with the medications they have given and they did not tell my mom what exactly skin problem she has. What do you think?
Additionally, she is also pre-diabetic and successfully undergo cataract operation.

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @nootherthan. Your mom is fortunate to have you in her corner. Reddish and scaly skin problems all over the body and lots of dandruff don't sound fun at all. Sorry to hear the condition has worsened with the medications she's been prescribed.
Tagging a few members who've talked about skin allergies or other reactions on the skin who might have some thoughts for you on your mother's situation @karenpacochca @solco14 @dmcara @ritabtripp @1fancydancer @squirt0104 @jenlemon. I'd also like you to meet @sueinmn and @ainsleigh.
nootherthan - how is your mom doing emotionally with the skin issues she's had?
@nootherthan Maybe you or your Mom can contact the dermatologists she has seen, and ask what their exact diagnosis is. Is this a recent problem, or has it been going on for a while? Does she have allergies that you know of?
She asked abt it already during the check ups, yet they did not tell her the diagnosis. They just give her medications (which the situation got worse) and advice to limit her intakes with foods just like fish, eggs something like that. She does but there is no changes.
#1 You need to get that diagnosis from the dermatologist. Let them know that the meds are making it worse. They should have prescribed a shampoo for the dandruff. #2 Aveeno lotion is fantastic for itchy skin (I know hers is not) but it also helps the texture and effects last for 24 hours. Get at Costco when on sale. You can get 2 huge bottles for $13.99 when it goes on sale, otherwise $17.99 for the same 2 bottles. It is normally $10.99 per bottle at Walmart.
#2 Pre Diabeties - This makes my skin dry and itch. The lotion above helps. I control my pre-diabetes with the food that I eat. Been trying to put me on drugs for years, but I keep fighting that. I can keep it down to 5.5 without drugs and watching what I eat. Two biggies for being a diebetic are sweets and carbs. Carbs push me over the line from pre diabetic to diabetic. I try really hard to do without pasta, bread, brown rice, or potatoes. I eat very little fruit. My body loves red meat, fish, pork loin chicken, and sea food. It also feels very satisfied with green veggies. I use lots of olive oil as well. She should drop pounds as well. I have never felt so good as when I eat Keto. But I have to get down to 20 carbs per day to lose even one pound in the beginning. I am very lucky because I don't crave carbs like most people do. My cholesterol is also dropping . I do control how much red meat I eat. I also try and keep my weight at 132. That is the weight my Dr. gave me to strive for. I move a lot. At least 10,000 steps per day. Movement helps the heart and diabeties.
#3 Has your mom considered being tested by an endocrinologist for low Thyroid?
Good luck with your mom. You have to remain diligent with doctors nowadays. Keep pushing and change doctors if need be.
It’s possible your mom is sensitive to the chemicals or fragrance in her creams, shampoos, etc. some asthmatics also have skin reactions. I had a lot of skin and scalp reactions that completely went away when I switched to preservative free, scent free products. The skin will still react when my asthma flares and my sleep is terrible then too. Good luck and hope it helps
