Sibo treatment Rifaxamin and Neomycin
I have been diagnosed with SIBO and am being advised to take Rifaxamin 3x a day and Neomycin 2x a day for 14 days. I have many concerns about the Neomycin due to the ototoxicity. I have a bit of tinnitus already the think that may make me more vulnerable to a possible problem. The idea of taking something that might hurt my hearing even more is concerning. Any thoughts about the Neomycin in this context? I would like to hear about the research and if genetics can be determined to see if this would be safe for me to take.
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a Dr. at Mayo/ Scottsdale who treats SIBO? I would like to coordinate care with my other doctors at Mayo as I think this is going to be essential to getting a handle on this.
Much gratitude in advance for this supportive community.
Take care,
Jaki

Rifaxan is terribly expensive, especially in the US. For 2025, the out of pocket limit is $2,000 (total drug cost for year). My last prescription for Rifaxan was free. Insurance companies will sometimes(often) reject the claim and then your doctor will have to back to them and explain the need, then it goes through. Canadian pharmacies do work as described in other posts.
Lately, I have tried cutting way back on sugar, and using a -Oregano Oil, which is working for me. I got that tip from another comment on this sight. I take three Oregano Oil pills (low cost thru Amazon)/day.(according to what I have found, there are5 different PreKinetic pills that may help with Oregano Oil ceding one.)
I also found (my opinion) that Low FODMAPs vary dependent upon the source and don’t work for everything. Some things on FODMAP are high sugar. Research(again my opinion) are set-up for multiple problems such as IBS, Celiac, SIBO, and IMO and these are not the same. Good luck.
Have you investigated mast cell activation as the root cause of SIBO? My daughter had recurring SIBO until she was treated with mast cell treatment. She was diagnosed at Mayo Scottsdale.
Amazingly, Vanderbilt University pharmacist got. in touch with Medicare for me and I got Xifaxin free of charge. If I need it more than once it is good to know about the Canadian pharmacy. (I don’t know how helpful Medicare would for repeat prescriptions).
