Shoulder replacement surgery

Posted by sandramae @sandramae, Mar 3, 2024

I am looking at total reverse shoulder replacement. I have torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders. I have had both knee replacements, and did well. I am hearing mixed messages about shoulder replacements. I am 82 years old, but in good health otherwise. Any advice/experience would be appreciated

@debhunter Thank you for the great advice. I've had both knees replaced, right hip, and left shoulder.

The recovery from knee and hip replacement we're pretty straightforward, The shoulder is entirely different and recovery takes longer and patience is required.

@heyjoe415 I found knee surgery to be the hardest to snap back. Really, it just shows that each person’s recovery is dependent on several factors:
Physical condition prior to surgery
Pre surgical exercises
Choosing the physician specializing in your needs
Exercises with PT and beyond post operative

I am 6 weeks postop fo rev verse shoulder replacement and will be 81 soon. My best advice is to do it sooner rather than later especially at our age as it is a long and difficult rehab. Do it at a major hospital especially one that specializes in orthopedics such as Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. I say that bc that bc of the important research that goes on at such ortho hospitals. Pick your surgeon carefully. I am doing well and looking forward to returning to the activities I love such as swimming and dancing tango as well as kayaking.

Ask what will happen if I don't do it. My understanding is the continuing joint erosion from osteoarthritis. You also nee , in y view, to be at the best hospital where osteoporosis can be evaluated. Shoulder disc won't operate if you have osteoporosis until you are treated bc of the risk of the bones fracturing. I had to be on evenity for two months bf my surgeon would operate. Hope this helps.
