How to prepare for shoulder replacement surgery?

Posted by effienana @effienana, Aug 21, 2022

Im having shoulder replacement surgery and want to get what Ill need ahead of time so Ill be prepared. Am considering Luxone 4 piece pillows from Amazon & need to know if anyone has had success with them for support of shoulder. These work on your bed but wonder if they will lead to lower back pain. Or is the recliner still the way to go?

My surgery is scheduled for May 19, on my dominant shoulder. I am wondering about using the toilet. Raised seat? Bidet? I am female, 73 years old, and my other shoulder is very painful also.

I had my RSR on Feb. 25 on my dominant side. All I can suggest is to try using you weakest hand as much as possible. It is truly awkward but at the end of 6 weeks it feels easier. I did not use bidet or raised seat. Be positive.

A bidet would be great if a person has the funds and room for plumbing changes, but not everyone does. I don't think a removable raised seat would help as much for shoulder surgery as it would for hip and knee surgeries. But it's possible that having less bend in your knees might help your arm drop back a little farther for a better reach. Wiping is going to be slow and awkward for a while, no question. Every time I felt sorry for myself with my temporary TSR limitations, I had to remind myself that there are people with amputations or birth defects that find creative ways to live with one arm. I sure wish one of them would write a book with a few good hints!

I had my surgery in 2023 and found this site to be very helpful. There is also a physical therapist on YouTube with lots of advice about dressing ,sleeping, using the bathroom, etc. Just search for reverse total shoulder replacement recovery or postop. It turns out, everything is not as bad as it seems.
