Should the nebulizer cup still contain saline after 18 minutes of nebu

Posted by bearsmom91 @bearsmom91, 6 days ago

I am wondering if it's normal to have residual saline solution left in the nebulizer cup after 18 minutes of nebulizing? I first nebulize albuterol for 12 minutes and then switch to saline solution for 18 minutes. I use both during the time I use my percussion vest for 30 minutes. Thank you!

@bearsmom91 Yes, it is definitely normal to have about 1ml of solution - whether saline, albuterol. or other meds left in the cup after nebulizing. The companies know this, so the total amount in each ampule is calculated to give you the dosage you need.
If more than that is left, try changing the angle of the mouthpiece so more is picked up and nebulizesd.

I agree with what Sue said.

I know the Monaghan company, the makers of the Ombra and AeroEclipse cups, make a point of saying that there will be some saline left in the cup. That is expected.

Nebulizing 4 mL of saline should take about 10 minutes or so under typical conditions.

Sometimes people use the AeroEclipse cup with a compressor other than the Ombra or a PARI Jet compressor. Because this cup requires more power than an average nebulizer cup, treatment time may be longer if the compressor does not provide sufficient airflow.

It can also depend on whether you are using breath actuated nebulization. With breath actuated nebulizers, the medication is released only when you inhale, rather than continuously. This means treatment time can be longer, especially if you are short of breath or breathing more shallowly.

@sueinmn Thank you very much, Sue. Your information is very helpful to me. After 8 1/2 months of using the nebulizer and percussion vest 2x/day I am able to take a full, deep breath. I noticed more residual saline after switching nebulizer cups a couple of weeks back. Thanks so much for your reply. I feel better about this.

@becleartoday Your: "or breathing more shallowly" made me think of how important it is. I finally learned to do, to do deep breaths in to hopefully get the saline deep down into the lungs. Deep breaths, hold and from what I understand we are to slowly breathe out with some resistance as you breath out...as if blowing on a whistle.
Does that last part sound right.....resistance..... as if blowing on a whistle???

@blm1007blm1007 It sounds right to me - my speech therapist had me practice blowing out through straws - first one for a milkshake, then a regular one, and finally through a coffee-stirrer, to get the point. I also blow a kazoo for strengthening my lungs. Maybe some day I'll be able to play the trumpet again?🤣

@winterfelllvoyager75 I don't know. My next test isn't until May, and I started doing this occasionally last October.
