Should I have an IOVERA injection before a TKR?
I had a TKR on my other knee 14 years ago and I survived without IOVERA. Wondering if the risks outweigh the benefits,

Having the PA hit my nerves over one year ago and still have nerve pain, I would say no
I’m 10 months post op. I had the Iovera and I’ve had more pain since then. The front of my lower leg is still numb yet i feel intense nerve pain. I spoke to a doctor from a different medical clinic than the one that did my surgery and he said his clinic never uses Iovera. So I’d say don’t get it.
Based on my experience, I would never advise someone to have Iovera. It wasn't the actual procedure experience but the next day and following year were awful. It has been a year and I wound up cancelling my TKR because of the pain from the Iovera. I am going today to a doctor for TKR without Iovera.
The new knee surgeon (he's not new, but new to me) that I am seeing for TKR (South Orange County, CA) only does Iovera before surgery. His associate does the injections. This surgeon has one of the longest waiting lists to get in to, and has the best reviews online. I think anything can damage nerves (I know this because my dogs pulled me so hard while walking them that I now have nerve damage on my index finger, even after repair surgery). The surgeon I had been seeing before (who doesn't do robotic, and I want that) said that Iovera will be the way to go now unless you opt for an 18-24 hour nerve block. I guess my fear of my bone being cut off during a TKR is more frightening than the possible side effects of the longer lasting nerve block...so hoping I don't regret it...but I am so afraid of this surgery that I'll do the Iovera..
@catheem Not everyone has a problem. I have also seen good reports. Good Luck and God Bless
@ lindielulu Thank you so much for your reply! That means a lot to me!
@catheem: I hear you loud and clear about the fear of knee replacement surgery. Take another minute to think long term. Knee surgery is tough and everyone knows it. So the doctors prescribe all kinds of meds to get you through it. The pain can come from many causes, but eventually nearly everyone gets past that. Nerve damage lasts forever. Good luck to you, whichever route you take.
You are very right about nerve damage...there is always a chance of that with any surgery, let alone having the Iovera..but what would you do if NO amount of pain medication works on you? Seriously...would you just not have the surgery? This is where I am in terms of why I've put this surgery off for over 3 years...
