Should I continue to take Calcium supplement?

Posted by jet1980 @jet1980, Dec 6, 2023

After my last Dexa scan results, I asked my GP if I should continue to take Calcium. She stated that my bones are so bad that there is no use. My Vitamin D levels are fine. My scans indicate -1 and -2.5 and T score at or below -2.5. She didn't want to take the time to discuss what the scores mean, so I am out in the dark reading as much as I can. I am only 61. Unfortunately, I live in a very rural area of NW Wisconsin and the medical care up here is the worst I have ever seen in my life. I do not drive so I have no choice but to continue care up here. I also have malabsorbtion, so I do not absorb vitamins efficiently.

Thank you for your feedback.

Vitamin K2 is a supplement. I'm not sure I have seen Calcium with K2 in it.

Did anyone use Algeacal products? Their ad is so impressive so I wonder.

i am using algaecal plus but not their strontium booster. Algaecal plus had just trace strontium but also has the vitamin C, D and K as MK-7,boron, magnesium. I initially picked it as I wasn’t tolerating Citracal and Citracal didn’t have the other vitamins/minerals except D. I tried one bottle of the algaecal plus and it went down well so I did purchase in quantity. It is $$$. I didn’t want to have to take many different supplements. I’ve since really educated myself through this site. I have added Osteo-Stim from Dr McCormick and am researching switching my overall calcium. I stopped reading the algaecal ads/Facebook page. they are very proactive with strontium booster as supplements seems to give everyone great gains but I’m skeptical. I did a full year of evenity with textbook gains and i’ve been very compliant with taking the supplements as they go down easy and don’t cause any GI/constipation issues. I’m into my 4 th month of alendronate to lock in gains and planning bloodwork next month (CTX PINP and Vitamin D) and lifting as heavy as I can, walking daily with a weighted vest.

Watch out for Alendronate. I took it for 5 years after breast cancer and developed osteoporosis. Check the Side effects of this medication!

I agree with many others here that you may be in the osteopenia range. I don't know your age, but I do know that medicare pays for drugs like Prolia only if you have osteoporosis. This implies that your bones aren't that bad yet. I also agree with others that telemedicine could be an option. If not, it could be worth that long drive into a big city for a second opinion. It doesn't necessarily mean multiple trips; perhaps once a year, if that is doable. It seems a better option if it prevents a trip to the ER after a catastrophic fracture and what could lead to. Best of luck.

I work with an honest R&D department. We found that minerals in multis were crystalizing in the small intestines in great numbers - mostly turning into free radicals, destroying any antioxidants around them.

We tested 250 name brand supplements - all of them had the problem.

The fix is a patented process called Oligo Fructose Compounding - causing 10x’s more absorbency of minerals (like calcium).

The point - if your calcium doesn’t have Oligo, you are not getting what you need. And mega doses are a problem.

Could you elaborate the study, or give a link of any published data? Whats the ingredient(s) or chemical description of oligo fructose? Thanks!
