Should I continue to take Calcium supplement?

Posted by jet1980 @jet1980, Dec 6, 2023

After my last Dexa scan results, I asked my GP if I should continue to take Calcium. She stated that my bones are so bad that there is no use. My Vitamin D levels are fine. My scans indicate -1 and -2.5 and T score at or below -2.5. She didn't want to take the time to discuss what the scores mean, so I am out in the dark reading as much as I can. I am only 61. Unfortunately, I live in a very rural area of NW Wisconsin and the medical care up here is the worst I have ever seen in my life. I do not drive so I have no choice but to continue care up here. I also have malabsorbtion, so I do not absorb vitamins efficiently.

Thank you for your feedback.

I think that your doctor saying your bones are “so bad” is horrible - i have a lot to learn about osteoporosis but I know that your doctor should provide resources and support - those scores do not seem overly scary to me. Can you get blood work done to see if you are low in certain areas? Do you feel comfortable doing internet research or do you need help?

Also wondered - can you research any endocrinologists who will do a video appointment with you? Then you could access doctors located elsewhere- they don’t really need to see you in person if you provide records (not sure how insurance works with it)

Your doctor’s comments are ridiculous. Your bones are so bad it’s useless to try to fix them? That’s BS. There are internet resources on ways to eat and how to supplement. It’s confusing but find a plan that you can follow. Plus there are many gentle exercises you can do at home free on YouTube. Wishing you well.

@noname65 Life
Extension Bone Restore has calcium and MK7. I personally like to take all my supplements separately so I can tailor the dosage to what I want, ie if I eat a lot of calcium rich foods one day I don’t take a calcium supplement but I don’t want to miss my other vitamins and minerals.

Be sure to use the K2-MK7 as it helps absorption of Calcium, with D3. I have ulcerative colitis so I to have malabsorption issues. I take them every 12 hours
And be sure everything is UPS certified for ingredients. One brand is Nature Made found in most stores. I wouldn’t order anything you ingest from Amazon, with the products they get sometimes older.
Good luck and do not give up on supplements but additional eat foods high in these ingredients for bone health. Too important to not take in all you can to support bone osteoblasts. If your issues are truly related to malabsorption you may need to take more and eat more foods to support bone health.

Did anyone use Algeacal products? Their ad is so impressive so I wonder.
