Does anyone have short bowel syndrome?

Posted by tj @tjanet, Jan 28, 2024

5 years ago I had a small intestines blockage and had to have all but 2 feet of my small intestines removed. I was on TPN and a feeding tube for a couple years years now I am eat food. I am able to eat most foods except raw vegetables and high fiber foods.
Over two years ago I started having constant abdominal spasms and constant nausea, doctors don't know what is causing it. The spasms feels like someone is twisting my insides and some pressure. Nausea medications don't help with the nausea.

My GI doctor wants me to get a colonoscopy without having a safety plan in place because of my Short Bowel Syndrome. Because of the colonoscopy prep. I need to have a plan in place because of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance issues and because of my kidney disease.

Going to go see a new pain doctor in a couple weeks hope he has some ideas on how to treat my constant abdominal pain. I know it is from my Short Bowel Syndrome condition.

I have had short bowel syndrome for 5 years. I have no pain I think because my Dr prescribed Creon capsules I take 3 times/day. It is expensive, but it is easy to apply for financial help & get it free. Hope this helps.

@sunshine29
Creon didn't help my constant upper left abdominal pain.
I had most of my small intestines removed but I still have my large intestines.

My doctors still don't know how to treat my Short Bowel Syndrome symptoms and they also don't know how to treat my constant upper abdominal pain. I have had constant upper left abdominal pain for over 5 months. I have a hard time sleeping because of the abdominal pain. I don't have much of an appetite because of the abdominal pain but it doesn't hurt to eat. I do LR IV fluids 5 times a week and I don't notice a difference with doing the LR IV fluids. I am scheduled to see a different pain doctor so I am hoping that he can help me with my constant abdominal pain.

My GI doctor wants to prescribe Reglan. I have tried Reglan before and it didn't help but caused more health problems. My GI doctor doesn't understand my health conditions. I am prone to side effects from medications.

Extended release medications are coming out in my ileostomy appliance after about 2 to 3 hours of taking them. I don't think I am getting the full dose of meds because of my faster liquid output.

@fmatthews2010 Welcome to Connect. Seeing capsules in my ileostomy output has certainly happened to me as well. Are these prescription, or over the counter meds?

For over the counter, I tend to take the non extended release, which is a bit of a pain. If these are prescription meds, talk to the prescriber and see if there is another formulation that would work.

Can you tell if the drug is working?

I don't have a ileostomy. I have 2ft of my small intestines left and I have all of my large intestines. I know that my body doesn't absorb all of my medicine that I take.

@susanmcp, your exchange with @fmatthews2010 caught my attention and brought me back through this discussion.

@tjanet, Janet, I am glad you came back into this conversation. You have been dealing with short bowel syndrome for quite some time, with only about two feet of your small intestine remaining but your large intestine intact. It sounds like you are also concerned that you may not be absorbing some of your medications as intended.

You’ve shared several things you’ve been struggling with recently, including the constant upper abdominal pain, medication concerns, and finding doctors who understand how to manage your short bowel syndrome.

Of everything you are dealing with right now, what would be most helpful for other members to share their experience with?
