Severe hip pain at night
I've had severe left hip pain at night, which wakes me up and keeps me awake unless I take something to help me sleep along with acetaminophen (e.g., Percogesic, Tylenol PM). My DEXA scan last week came back fine, but my left hip reading changed -1.6% from my previous scan, Although I realize that's within the +/- 1-2-ish% expected, in October of 2024 my hip X-ray showed small osteophytes on both sides of the joint, mild joint space narrowing, and gluteal enthesopathy. Any chance any of these issues caused the DEXA change?

I have experienced nagging ache/pain in my hip and outer left thigh for a bit now which also wakes me. No repositioning helps. My rheumatologist told me it was likely trochanteric bursitis - inflammation of the bursa. Massaging the area seems to help my issue.
I don’t know if the pain you’re describing is the same, but it wouldn’t hurt to check with your doc as “unusual thigh or groin pain” is a thing with OP, especially with Reclast and some of the other meds.
Wishing you a quick resolution. Cheers!

1 ReactionI have the same left hip pain that goes deep into my thigh that wakes me up during the night. I had a Reclast Infusion in June 2025 and have decided not to do another this year. My Endo is ok with that but wants to check my CTX level in August. If it has gone back up into the 600's then she suggests doing another Reclast at that time. Most nights I take 2 acetaminophen before bed and that helps.

2 ReactionsHip pain causes groin pain. Mine will hurt for months then go away for awhile. I’m on Tymlos and I’ve about had it 9 months in. I’m finally off pain pills so it must be working. Corticosteroid injections can help but it’s counter productive to building bones. Feel better
Warm wishes, E

2 ReactionsI had a tough time sleeping for almost 2 years due to left hip pain. My latest scan showed Osteophytes and Osteo got worst in the last 2 years. As a last ditch effort to relieve pain, I went to Acupuncture. I'm utterly shocked that the transfered nerve pain from my hip was greatly relieved after 2 sessions! Definitely recommend it and I sleep much better. Im approved for hip surgery but the quality of sleep is everything until then. Feel better everyone.

5 Reactions@beanieone have you ever thought about sciatica? It’s so hard to know especially after having reclast infusion.

3 ReactionsHi @kristie2
I actually do have sciatica (compression frax complication) that bothers me from time to time, and I know it can cause leg pain. Thanks for the mention - sometimes ya just don’t know.
Cheers!

2 ReactionsI am not currently on any osteoporosis meds (quit Tymlos after about a year). I have bad hip pain on both sides at night. I constantly roll from one side to the other. Hip xrays have shown my hip joints are fine. There is a muscle that runs from the side of your lower back across the front of your hip. This is where my problem actually is. I need exercise and physical therapy - it has helped in the past. But family illness/crises have prevented this for many months now, and I'm back to having the pain most nights. Ask your doctor.....
