Severe chronic back pain

Severe chronic back pain…I’ve suffered for years and have been told different things about my back pain, I was told taking weight off would help ive last 50 pounds and no relief if anything it’s getting worse. I’m having a hard time doing basic things without being in severe pain. I’ve done massage Acupuncture physical therapy serval times. Now I’m just frustrated about even going to the doctor cause nothing changes. It hurts to even walk and my big toes on both feet are numb. What should I do I’m losing hope and I don’t know how much more pain I can handle. Please help

Hi, this is my first time to post. I’ve had chronic back pain since I was 17 & I’m 75 now. I finally found a good doctor who did minimally invasive back surgery, fusing L4-5. I have scoliosis in my lower spine, and degenerative disc disease with a lot of arthritis. I am still in pain and my dr is recommending a medial branch block followed by radio frequency ablation, if the block helps.

My pain is on the right side of my hip/lower back, from slightly above the waist and runs down my thigh. I cannot stand or walk without pain. An X-ray has ruled out a problem with my hip joint.

Has anyone had the above two procedures? How did that go for you?

Hi n9gtx,
I'm responding to your post.
I have the nerve block and ablation procedures done about every 3-4 months. It works well for me and I say try it.
Insurance requires you to have two nerve blocks spaced two weeks apart to see if it will work for you. Each block lasted about a week. The ablation gives me 3-4 months of relief. The procedure is not too unpleasant. I can't say that about dealing with my insurance....

I have the same kind of pain you describe in my right buttock. I can't do much . I am in severe pain. I put ice on my butt and that helps, but I don't want to live just sitting on ice packs. Been to acupuncture, PT, cortisone. Nothing works. Now Dr is putting me on pain meds. Maybe they will help. I am keeping my faith in God. He will help me. Marlie

I believe you have a torn or inflamed muscle/ligament. Please get an MRI and X-rays do double check that daily activity won't worsen it. Good luck to you!

I'm no doctor, but I highly recommend trying swimming. It should help alleviate pressure on your spine, improve circulation, and hopefully help your feet.

Thank you Henry108164! That’s good to know. Has anyone else had medial branch block and/or RFA for their lower back?

I’m so sorry you’re still experiencing so much pain. I completely understand because (regardless of what treatments I get) there are still parts of my spine that are excruciatingly painful. I take strong pain meds throughout the day, too, just to try and have some semblance of a normal life. I hope you are getting some relief from your medications. My husband and I’ve discussed my enrolling in the pain sensitization class at Mayo but the thought of trying to control my pain simply with mental “techniques” completely terrifies me.

It possibly sounds like sciatica. See a provider. However, in the meantime, look into specific sciatica support belts which may help with your pain. Good luck.

There is nothing private about my orthopedic surgeon. Don’t you guys have socialized medicine there?

Yes, this is what it’s becoming around the world. What you’re going to have to do is make a plan and you are going to have to talk to your primary care doctor. You will need to get an MRI which will tell you what part of the line you get to get into. In the meantime, you will have to be proactive and do exercises, get outpatient pain management procedures, and take pain medicine. You will have to find out what the protocol is there to get to surgery. I’ve had surgery many times. It’s a long process, but actually it’s a good one and you are better off if you can start Doing whatever you can to help yourself before you get to surgery. This means finding out as much as you can about your condition. There’s a lot to know and there’s a lot of doctors people and help to access on your way towards getting surgery. I think they all hope we will die before we have to use their resources. Sorry to have to say this, but it sort of seems to be the truth for everyone. There are too many people that are trying to use the system at once, but like I said, in the meantime, there’s a lot you can learn about your condition take advantage of that time and of all the procedures there are available. And remember squeaky wheel gets the oil!
