Severe chronic back pain

Severe chronic back pain…I’ve suffered for years and have been told different things about my back pain, I was told taking weight off would help ive last 50 pounds and no relief if anything it’s getting worse. I’m having a hard time doing basic things without being in severe pain. I’ve done massage Acupuncture physical therapy serval times. Now I’m just frustrated about even going to the doctor cause nothing changes. It hurts to even walk and my big toes on both feet are numb. What should I do I’m losing hope and I don’t know how much more pain I can handle. Please help

Ha Ha Ha --Loriesco I feel like I am looking in the mirror when I read your story--I am a 69 Year old male dealing with this shit for 30 + years --the struggle has take up the part of my life that was supposed to be fun, sexual, excititing--wel God had a differen course of action for me!. The attitude is so important--I am a shrink and it is so easy to help others--but when it comes to moi--forget it! I have turned the corner regarding my expectations of fantasizing about being "the way I was" and dealing with the way I am and doing things ie exercise, relationships etc that I can and believe it or not being around people who support me the way I am--Ive gone through two marriages and now I am seeking a soulmate who believes me and loves me for valid expectations.! well thats a start You have been good for my mental health already!!! Happy to help! Whenever I get "down" all I have to do is look here to help others and be grateful that I have resources - mental ones - and interests to keep me buoyed. I like that saying: "This too shall pass." it is so true! If I just hang in there, a brighter moment will come.... when it hits I have to remember, too, that it will pass. So not to get so self-absorbed on either side of the depths or the heights. "Moderation in all things!" 😉

Hi, shooshoo. I know you posted back in April but Im new to Connect. I read your post and wanted to ask you if you have been able to find any relief from your chronic back pain? I’ve struggled for years with chronic thoracic and lumbar back pain. I have degenerative disc as well (along with bulging discs and stenosis) and receive facet joint injections at MANY levels at a time several times a year and they do seem to help for a few months. I also get epidural injections in my thoracic area a few times a year and that helps, too. I am a patient at the Mayo Jacksonville, FL location. I love my pain medicine doctor. He’s so kind, patient, and exceptionally skilled at helping control my pain. I dont live in Jacksonville so my husband takes me over from where i live about three hours away. I do have a pain management doctor where i live who is very kind to manage my pain medication. I just have so many places in my back that are incredibly painful and injections only help with some areas of pain. I couldnt live every day without pain medicine, unfortunately. I cant stand or walk for more than thirty minutes without excruciating pain. I also have horrible neuropathy. My lower legs and feet stay numb all the time. I have neuropathy in my forearms and hands, too. Just not as bad as my lower extremeties. I cant lie on my back because then my entire legs get numb. Im scheduled to see neurology at Mayo next month. I really hope youve been able to find relief from some of your pain. I understand completely how devastating the pain is to your life. It has been for me, too. I hope to hear back from you and that you are feeling better.

See an ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON. I got my life back by having my hips replaced and then to an orthopedic spine surgeon and had my lower lumbar dealt with. Got my life back after suffering for sooooo many years!

Hi, this is my first time to post. I’ve had chronic back pain since I was 17 & I’m 75 now. I finally found a good doctor who did minimally invasive back surgery, fusing L4-5. I have scoliosis in my lower spine, and degenerative disc disease with a lot of arthritis. I am still in pain and my dr is recommending a medial branch block followed by radio frequency ablation, if the block helps.

My pain is on the right side of my hip/lower back, from slightly above the waist and runs down my thigh. I cannot stand or walk without pain. An X-ray has ruled out a problem with my hip joint.

Has anyone had the above two procedures? How did that go for you?

Explore pain rehabilitation and self-management.

Mayo has a 3-week pain rehabilitation center that can be very helpful. It changed my life.
