Second Opinion

Posted by toryinhampton @toryinhampton, Sep 24, 2023

My ophthalmologist and I have been working to lower the pressures for the last 3 years. I have an iStint, have had 4 Slts and have tried numerous drops that are either ineffective or I’ve reacted to them. When is it time to get a second opinion? How does someone going about this? Do I have to let my doctor know, as I’m sure the second doctor would have to see my records.

That's a tricky one but in the end if your doctor really cares for you he should be OK with a second opinion...good luck !

Thank you. She’s been rated very highly but at the end of the day she’s only human. 😊

Sometimes doctors don’t take the fact that you want a second opinion very well. But, so what? It’s not like you’re betraying a friend.

Years ago, during a visit to an ophthalmologist (if I remember correctly, his name was Dr. Frazee in Plano, TX) for a checkup, he saw something that alerted him that I might have acute angle glaucoma. He wanted to schedule surgery right then and there. But he didn’t really explain anything and I didn’t want to make a snap decision. So I told him I think I wanted to see a specialist before I decided.

A couple of days later, I received a letter in the mail from his office firing me as a patient. I thought that was pretty rude of him. But it turned out for the best. I found a fantastic glaucoma specialist (Dr. Starita of Dallas) who confirmed the diagnosis and explained everything very clearly. I ended up having him do the surgery and everything turned out great.
