Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp

Posted by chuckiepoo1 @chuckiepoo1, Mar 3 5:57pm

I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp about 10 years ago and have tried every medicated shampoo available that I'm aware of as well as some medications. None have given any satisfactory results. Has anyone discovered a regimen or products, be it natural or medicine that has given them relief?

My daughter uses a shampoo with salicylic acid (Neutrogena). I use a shampoo with tea tree oil. Scalpicine (contains steroids) can help but is harsh and can't be used too much.

I tried a different shampoo because the tea tree oil makes my hair dry, but I am having an outbreak and going back!

What have you tried? I am also open to suggestions!

I use 4 different shampoos in succession. Shampoo daily and leave the foam on for several minutes in the shower.
Zinc pyritione, 3% salicylic acid, selenium sulfide and ketoconazole prescription strength. The newest prescription technology is is rofimulast
foam ZORYVE. It may need prior approval as it is expensive.

I have tried all of the medicated shampoos at one time or another and leave them on the scalp for 5 to 10 minutes as suggested by my dermatologist. I've also used clobetasol. None of these have anything more than modest effects. I have not tried Scalpicine, however, and certainly may check it out.

@chuckiepoo1 my mother had a prescription for steroid drops, a bit stronger than Scalpicine. Maybe that is an option. I have never seen a dermatologist for this problem but maybe you have. A PCP could probably prescribe as well. Steroid solutions thin the skin over time and are absorbed to some extent, so there is a limit to the number of drops at a time on the Rx.

Scalpicin 1% hydrocortisone is quite safe OTC. You can use it twice a day if that helps. It is an alcohol base solution. I use it often for itchy ears.
A physician can prescribe a stronger variety if needed. Generics are available.

Apple cider vinegar is great.

Scouse, how much/often apple cider vinegar, and diluted?
