role of the consultant
Hi folks. I saw a note in my operation summary that a consultant was present. I am just wondering who the consultant is or was. Is that what they call the residents who are watching or the medical company people?

Hi @axelglausen, I can understand your concern at reading that in your operation summary.
Consultants are colleague physicians who may be present during a procedure. A consultant physician or surgeon who does not take full responsibility for a patient, but acts in an advisory capacity, deliberating with and counseling the attending physician or surgeon. A consultant is usually a highly trained specialist.
I hope that puts your mind at ease.
Ahhh! Makes sense. So the consultant does not perform any of the surgery?
Not usually. You can ask for more details from your attending surgeon specific to your surgery.
