Any experience with Robotic assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP)?

Posted by lizziew @lizziew, Nov 20, 2025

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had experience with having RASP? Robotic assisted simple prostatectomy?
Outpatient surgery? Incontinence issues afterward? Recovery ease?
Hubby is scheduled for surgery January 12th. Just curious to hear how other’s did with the simple prostatectomy?
Also, was tissue from the procedure sent to pathology? If so, did your Gleeson score change?

Thank you.

RP 5 weeks ago. No pain afterwards and didnt take a single painkiller. Stayed in only 1 night.
Incontinence : fee flow at first after catheter out but now down to dry nights and 1 pad for the day. Just need a sleep after lunch to help this process.
As others state its diffetent for all. Helps to stay or get fit before by lots of walking and healthy eating. Veg based diet better with lots og fruit. Good luck.!

Thank you! I’m glad your surgery went well, with no pain afterwards. That is wonderful.
May I ask your age? My hubby is 72, will turn 73 a month after surgery. Older patients don’t bounce back as quickly, but we are hoping for the best.

Hubby is being is discharged the same day. I think that is a little early, but that’s the plan per the urologist.

Was the RASP to address BPH only, or do you have PCa, and have radiation scheduled?

Thank you,
Lizzie

I am a little younger at 64. Fairly active but not a fitness freak by any means. My RARP was for prostatectomy for cancer. Have some agressive cancer findings in my pathology but clear margins and no breakthrough into surrounding tissue reported.
I think I made the right treatment decision but it is really hard when you have no symptoms prior!
Have no radiation planned and pray I dont need it.
I was planned to stay 2 nights but only needed one.
The incontinence is a worry too but have made some rapid gains there too so far.
Changed diet to mistly vegetarian and no red meat pre op and psa went down from 7 to 5.5.
Wish you and your husband all the very best in whatever route you choose. It isn't easy but with a supportive wife like mine and I can see, yourself it is much easier.
God bless. R

@risa6069 congrats on your recovery! Incontinence during sleep can be a problem in the months following RARP.
Get yourself a protective pad (available as most pharmacies approx 36” square) and put it under your bedsheet or lay directly on it like I did.
Nothing worse than waking your wife at 2:30AM to change the sheets!!

@heavyphil Shopping tip: I bought these.

10 bucks, instead of 25 for some human ones.
Dignity? We gave that up ages ago.

@retireditguy Thank the wife for that one. They just turned up when I got home from work. Lucky she knows my sense of humour.

@risa6069 hi there,

I’m glad you are doing well. I appreciate your feedback.
Been reading so many articles about RASP, and RALP, and a little overwhelmed at the moment.
Meeting with the RO in a couple of weeks, and hoping for more clarity.

I hope you and your wife, family, have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Thanks again,
Lizzie

Thanks Lizzie and family. Have a great Thanksgiving too! Let me know how your plans and thoughts progress. There is no easy solution but need to go with what you feel is best for you and your family. We need to muster all the inner strength we possess for this journey so that we all come out the other side even stronger! We can do this! R
