Any experience with Robotic assisted simple prostatectomy (RASP)?

Posted by lizziew @lizziew, Nov 20, 2025

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had experience with having RASP? Robotic assisted simple prostatectomy?
Outpatient surgery? Incontinence issues afterward? Recovery ease?
Hubby is scheduled for surgery January 12th. Just curious to hear how other’s did with the simple prostatectomy?
Also, was tissue from the procedure sent to pathology? If so, did your Gleeson score change?

Thank you.

I have not heard of a "simple" prostatectomy. Sounds like something you'd see before or after a TV commercial for "same day complete dental implants." I had a single-incision, DaVinci Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy, and believe me, there was nothing "simple" about it. I had "deep"..."very deep"...post-op pain for 3-4 weeks. I felt like I had been beat up, assaulted, and pummeled "down there/in there." I had a catheter for 11 days (usually varies 10-14 days). I had profound urinary incontinence for 3-4 months before it started resolving. Despite preservation of both neuro-vascular bundles to keep me sexually "able", I haven't had an erection in these eight (8) months of post-op recovery. The surgery required me to have a two-night stay in the hospital. It should have been one night, but one overly cautious/zealous physical therapist didn't like my quick loss of balance when trying to stand up from my bed that was positioned too low, and involved too much painful abdominal contractions upon rising. Once she set the bed to appropriate height, I stood right up. She said nothing, but later that day a different nurse said: "So, I see you have difficulty standing up and with balance, so we're going to keep you here one more night." I figured it was a good thing, if only to rest more under nursing supervision...again, I was quite beat-up from the supposed "better, single incision" radical prostatectomy. So...my advice is...get a thorough written description of what a "simple prostatectomy" is vs a "real prostatectomy." Then go get a second opinion.

Hubby had been on active surveillance for the last five months. We had hoped to be on AS for a longer period, as his PCa doesn’t seem to be aggressive. However, his new urologist said she is not comfortable with continuing AS. Hubby has a Gleason score of 7, PSA 10.7, and a high Decipher. She said the biopsy focused on the Pirads 4 and 5 lesions. Because hubby’s prostate is so large, she said there could be more cancer that the biopsy didn’t capture. That is why she is addressing the BPH by RASP, and then radiation to address the cancer. Fingers crossed the doctor is right about the simple prostatectomy procedure. After radiation, she said that surgery to remove the prostate is not possible.

Hi there! My hubby’s prostate is 170cc. His doctor said that only about 1% of men have prostates as large as my husband. I guess you are a rare one as well!

Thanks for getting back to me.
I go for biopsy on 12-11-25. Do you know what size his lesions were and what zones they were in ?

I have one lesion 1.2cm in the transition zone. It is a PIRADS 3.

Lesion 2 is in the midline anterior . Size .085 x 0.64 x 0.9 cm

Lesion 3 is in midline anterior mid gland. Size 0.78 x 0.74 x 0.57cm

Lesion 1 is Pirads 5. Lesion 2 and 3 are Pirads 4

RP 5 weeks ago. No pain afterwards and didnt take a single painkiller. Stayed in only 1 night.
Incontinence : fee flow at first after catheter out but now down to dry nights and 1 pad for the day. Just need a sleep after lunch to help this process.
As others state its diffetent for all. Helps to stay or get fit before by lots of walking and healthy eating. Veg based diet better with lots og fruit. Good luck.!
