Restless leg syndrome worse on Forteo
Have daily, long-term battle with RLS. While on Tymlos, the problem worsened, along with the onset of the nightly leg pains, and was one reason to stop the drug. Am now on Forteo x 6 wks, with the same problem every evening.. Was advised by my Endo. to try every other day Forteo, and did so, with some improvement, on some days, but not consistent. I am 78 yrs. old. I need a drug to help the bones in a timely way, but not leave me semi-sick for two years. Cannot take Evenity since I had a TIA a few months ago, so that would leave me with the other classes of meds which do not build bone, and also have possible nasty side effects. Spinal score was bad, but am about ready to quit this game. Anyone have RLS and go through this? Any idea if this is likely to improve, or when??

hi, mamabear77,
teriparatide can cause low magnesium and low magnesium can cause low potassium.
Calcium, magnesium and potassium imbalance are implicated in muscle spasm and RLS.
Taking magnesium glycinate or citrate might help. The trouble with magnesium is that it can cause stomach discomfort. Magnesium glycinate is the easiest on the stomach.
You might have your electrolytes tested and consult with the prescribing physician.
Both Tymlos and Forteo work by causing transient elevation in serum calcium, and that may be throwing you off balance.
I hope you don't have to quit because I think Forteo the best available osteoporosis medication.
Unrelated to your question is this a link to a connect conversation about Nidra bands https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/rls-and-the-nidra-bands/
Though, restless leg increase isn't noted as a common side effect, it is noted. Leg pain is common, but commonly abates within three months.
I've just begun my fourth year of Forteo without side effects, so I'm not the best source information.
I hope you won't have to quit because I think Forteo is the best available osteoporosis medication.

1 ReactionHello gently, thank you for these comments. I'm 83, my doctors have me a little scared about my terrible DXA scores; my instincts are to rely on natural remedies + exercise; I have a cheap Drug plan and generic Forteo would cost $395/mo. I'm thinking of waiting til next year after I look for a better Drug plan. ,, do you have any thoughts?
Re balance of salts, I'd like to say a word for a salt supplement called LMNT, website--https://drinklmnt.com/.
I had low sodium, and have been using their powders for a few years, preferring the Unflavored. But hydration being so important for seniors, and salt balance being mentioned here, I thought I'd pass along the information. It's available in many stores now, but I've always ordered from the company online. Am pleased with their Customer Service.
@shmbrd, have you checked RX Advocates https://therxadvocates.com/prescriptions/forteo/
Your income may be too high and $80 a month is more than small change.
I easily see the temptation of waiting until January. The only thing that would make that a bad choice would be a meanwhile-fracture.
I'm not apprised of your dexa results or of other medical complications.
You might consider an abbreviated course of Evenity, provided you haven't the cardiac risks.
I can see an advantage in 6 or 9 months of Evenity followed by Forteo. Medicare would pay for Evenity, if it is given in the doctor's office.
I delayed taking Forteo and am fonder of natural remedies. Reading stories from people who waited a little too long has given me a deep fear of fracture.
If you do decide to wait the nine months, be very careful with all of your activities.
Post back especially if you have luck with RX Advocates.
