Relief for neuropathy in feet and lower legs

Posted by sbn4 @sbn4, May 6 1:49pm

I have had neuropathy in my left foot for many years. It is now getting into my right foot. I had spinal surgery almost 5 years ago (6/22/21) and all sciatica is gone and only repercussion is that my back tires more readily so standing up long periods is not possible. But the neuropathy is increasing. Some remedies include ginger, turmeric, lemon juice, honey tea and pink salt. I made this and my feet swelled like crazy because I do not generally add salt to anything. Now I am using all but the salt and my feet have some interesting sensations with swelling going down a bit. But, really, has anyone had any relief from any of these crazy potions being pushed in the media? I am fairly active but I don't do as much yoga as in the past and I stretch almost daily. I am getting lazy...but go to the garden daily. Will be 85 in July. Still working but by remote. Not sure how to handle this nasty numbness, tingling and sometimes frozen rt foot!!! Thanks for any responses....

@sbn4, I'm pretty much in the same boat at age 83. I have numbness and some tingling but no pain in both legs and feet from idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy. I tire easily from standing up long periods and sometimes even short periods. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/. I do think supplements can help some but not sure they will fix anything and there are many different scams out there so we all have to be wary and do some research on anything we think might help.

I'm glad to hear that you are fairly active because I think that is one of the important things to keep our mobility. I do exercise some daily and wished I could walk more but walking is not something I do well. Have you looked into any physical therapy to see if it might be helpful for your sometimes frozen right foot?

Please get your B12 checked as it can cause Neuropathy. I have to give myself weekly B12 injections as my body does not absorb B12 well. My B12 was low and I was having Neuropathy symptoms in my arms, hands, legs and feet. I have to get a MMA test to see where my levels are.

I wish you all the best. Prays & Blessings....

I appreciate your note...the dr said my B12 was a little low but didn't relate it to any neuropathy. I had the option of injections or chewables. I will resume taking the oral B12 and then discuss again at my visit coming up June 11th. I hope it works!
Prayers and Blessings to you too...

The supplements are impressive but way too expensive...I have just eliminated all of my debt except mortgage and am not going to charge hundreds for a pill that may work a little!
I can mix my own concoctions and take a BComplex with extra B12...I already take D3 daily and can add magnesium...
I won't listen to anyone else's raps about a pill...too annoying and long winded. If something really works I am sure someone could just say it clearly and directly!
My neuropathy is from an accident on Jan 3, 1973...all lower extremity issues and finally back surgery. My left ankle is now asking for attention....I am hoping to try stem cell if there is enough soft tissue. Since I eliminated the salt from the Dr Oz remedy it seems some new sensations are coming into my feet...most interesting...if anyone wants that recipe I will list it if you ask to avoid your having to listen to too long a rap to get to it..but he does give it!
Thank you for responding... I really appreciate it. But these remedies are insane at the prices being asked of octogenarians! really! and I am still working but it is still too costly. I will use herbs by bulk at the health food store.....
Take care,
Be well,
Love n Peace!

@sbn4 May I ask what kind of surgery cured your sciatica? I am going to see a neurosurgeon soon and have a lot of sciatica. Thanks!

the surgery healed the sciatica!
I had sciatica for years (maybe 30) due to an accident when I broke my left tibia that has 3 screws in it to this day..
Accident was Jan3, 1973!
Back surgery was due to the accident that eventually caused sciatica. Yoga and working out in water kept me walking for years but not without pain.
Surgery created no pain...very nice but I now have a weak back that keeps me limited on how much standing and walking I can do. I can walk around but no serious hiking. I can stand around to bake a batch of something but then need to rest my back. I can do more yoga now and its about to be 5 years post surgery.
Your MRI will show what's happening in your spine and why you have painful sciatica. I hope they have a solution for you. I had no choice about surgery. There was no more cerebrospinal fluid flowing up and down my spine and I was going to be confined to a wheelchair if I didn't get it. So I did and I am still walking.
Good luck to you...sciatica is so awful. Turmeric helped alleviate the pain at times Also water arobics was good.
Thank you for your response!
Take care.

@sbn4 Thanks for the positive post. I was actually asking for more specific information on what kind of surgery you had. Was it a fusion? Where was the surgery on your spine lumbar, thoracic, or cervical? I recently had a minor decompression surgery on my right side L4-L5, and my sciatica is also fixed, but now my left side is worse than my right side was before surgery.

I’m sorry you are experiencing neuropathy in your feet. I tend to believe most neuropathy comes from our spine. The fact that you had blocked fluid in yours for years seems to be a fairly logical explanation. I also have neuropathy from my spine, but mine improved after my last surgery, but has returned since I messed up the left side at the gym. Nothing seems to help much as you will see if you keep reading posts about neuropathy on this website. My favorite semi very temporary relief comes from walking around my grass barefoot. It’s called grounding, and hopefully I can move to Florida soon so I can do it all year. I’m in crummy Illinois now!
