Redundant / Tortuous Colon Colonoscopy Prep Problems

Posted by fuzzywuzzy1969 @fuzzywuzzy1969, Jun 13 4:32pm

I have a Redundant / Tortuous Colon with Diverticulosis, I am also a Short Bowel Patient. For the past few years when I go in for my Colonoscopy I am told that the prep was incomplete. When I ask what was incomplete he Dr.'s say the pockets of Diverticulosis were not visibly clean. On one Colonoscopy they checked me into the hospital to do the prep and I was given 4 jugs of 4000ml PEG , Nulytely over 48 hours and I was still not clean. Has anyone else had problems with Colonoscopy prep? Recommendations? I will be going in Northwestern Memorial in July for a Double Balloon Colonoscopy, they have also placed me on Miralax 2x day till the day of Prep starts.

I've also had the problem with colonoscopy prep because of a tortuous colon. They did an unsuccessful colonoscopy in April and an unsuccessful barium enema in May. I've had blood in my stool for months but nobody can see more than 50% of my colon because it loops so much. The blood is not bad when the stool is softer but it rarely is. I have a meeting with the colonoscopy Dr. but not til July 20. They have not really seemed to be in much of a hurry to do anything so I try not to worry…
I did get pretty cleared out for the barium enema they just had me take a bunch of miralax the morning of it.
Still a mystery, all of it. Thanks for your message. It's nice to know we aren't alone!

I also experienced this. Gi told me next time, all liquid diet for ? Days before and 2 jugs Golytely. So discouraging when you go through all that prep and it still doesn’t work.

I know! That stuff is so gross to even have to drink ONE time and I had to do it 3 times within a couple months, and I'll probably have to do it again in the next couple months and they probably still won't be able to see everything. So very stressful!

I suffer from this as well, my doctor had me on a clear diet for 2 days. Then 2 laxatives and a gallon of Miralax the first day and then again the 2nd day. I was cleaned out. Due to the transverse colon revealed significantly excessive looping and a redundant colon the procedure was aborted. Having a redundant torturous colon causes problems with a colonoscopy. One of the risks is perforated bowel

Yes, it has caused a few problems for me every time they do my Colonoscopy.

I had a virtual visit with a dietitian from the gi dept this morning. She gave me a number of suggestions I thought I’d pass along. Some have already been mentioned here before, but I’ll post them anyway. She reviewed my entire diet first and gave me some surprising recommendations. For breakfast, my Cracklin’ Bran and coffee are fine as it is oat bran, but no more berries. Smoothies for lunch ok as fruit is blended to break up fibers. Dinner. No veggies unless cooked. No salad. Absolutely no corn. No red meat. Retry magnesium oxide. No fruit unless cooked. This is going to be really hard!

What makes the GoLYTELY bearable for me (in addition to chilling it in the refrigerator) is to take some deluxe garden fresh ginger and add a decent sized slice to the bottom of each glass full. I swallow the GoLYTELY fast before my taste buds really register it, the ginger at the bottom effectively masks the taste. And of course you don't swallow it.
