Recurring sore throat without COVID

Posted by Lucy @welchllb, Feb 25, 2022

I have been experiencing a mild sore throat on and off for at least a month or two. It is now worse. I have tested and the result is Negative for COVID. I had acute COVID with pneumonia August 2020 but was not hospitalized. Anyone else have this long term symptom? I have many other symptoms, too, but this one is fairly new. Thank you.

There are a number of seasonal viruses and cold viruses around at this time of year which can cause miserable sore throats. There are also bacterial infections like tonsillitis and strep lurking. Also, sinus drainage can make your throat sore, as can dry indoor air, pollutants, or poor air conditions.

The usual medical advice is that if a sore throat doesn't resolve in 3-5 days of conservative treatment (gargle, pain relievers and warm liquids) or you have a fever above 100F, you should seek medical care.
Even those with long Covid need to be vigilant about other things that can cause problems, and not assume every new symptom came from the original infection.
How long has this been a problem? Have you noticed some things make it worse?

Thank you. I am better. I just put together that when we/I do more than usual the previous 24 hours, I wake up with a sore throat.

Also, just read a great article in the WSJ - Saturday/Sunday February 26-27 called "The Lonely Odyssey of Chronic Illness". It focuses on Lyme Disease but mentions Long Covid. Meghan O'Rourke, the author, has many good insights on chronic illness. Her new book comes out March 1st, "The Invisible Kingdom: Reimagining Chronic Illness".

I had covid in January of 2020 and double pneumonia in December of 2020. The latter landed me in the hospital for a week. In addition to the severe lung damage, I’m beginning to think I have some type of Long Covid too. I get a raspy throat at times that comes and goes. I have periodic hours in a day where I cannot smell or taste anything, episodes of fatigue and slight brain fog. Doctors look at me like I’m crazy. Im not.
