Recovery Milestone

Posted by Scott R L @scottrl, Dec 16, 2023

I like to share good news.

I've been working hard at recovery ever since having a lacunar stroke on Christmas Eve, 2018. (Was that really five years ago?) It left me permanently disabled, but I am getting better.

This week, I had a meeting to attend. Normally, my wife would drive me, but she's out of town this week.

I wasn't sure I could drive to the meeting, participate, and drive home safely. I tend to fatigue quickly. But I gave it a try. (Folks at the meeting offered to escort me home if I needed it.)

And I did great! I was gone, out on my own, for three hours! My previous record was about an hour. What a boost to my self-confidence.

My world just got bigger.

If you're out there, struggling to recover, don't give up! The next step forward may be just ahead.

To Scott R L @scottrl, YAY!!📣 I am so happy for your GIANT STEPS! We must celebrate every milestone. It is a good thing to, once in awhile, take some time and review how far we have come from where we started, and give ourselves credit. We don't do this often enough! So happy for you, Scott, and thanks for sharing!

Thank you, pkh!

Ever since the stroke, I have made it a policy to think in terms of how far I've come, not how far I have yet to go.

I told that to a friend of mine, who lost her husband a couple years ago. She printed it out and has it taped to her mirror.

Just goes to show you -- positivity can be contagious!

Scott, congratulations on your recent success! I am a Massage Therapist. I am 80 years old. I had 3 TIAs December 2017. I have also successfully treated several massage clients who have had serious strokes. My advice is always to remember your body WANTS to be well and it will do so if you give it the inforomation it needs and the environment it requires to selfheal. Your successful solo adventure to that meeting was your body telling you, "See! We CAN do this, together!" Don't give up. Keep moving forward and don't let the past determine your future.

Thank you, Barry.

That's an excellent reminder.

You're right, I can sense that my body wants to improve. Just within the last few months, my affected hand is "volunteering" to help out when I do stuff. I don't have to think about it. Of course, I don't have much (if any) dexterity -- yet.

Thanks, too, for watching my YouTube channel. I really appreciate it, especially your comments.
