Reclast reaction

Posted by bettyleigh @bettyleigh, Jan 1 9:35am

I had reclast two days ago. Yesterday I woke up with what felt like a mild case of the flu and progressed throughout the day to severe nausea, shakes and chills and bad headaches. Today is a bit better. Has anybody ever experienced this. I have not taken any other medication or infusions for osteoporosis.

@nycmusic no pain no gain. My bones fell apart in cervical spine surgery. (which is where the side effects seemed to focus when I did the first infusion. I will deal with the side effects. I did the research. My infusion team failed me. Next time we will all be prepared. I won't be 3 weeks out from a double spine surgery, I will flush fluids, take an NSAID, and they will slow the infusion down - and maybe even do less. (Research proves this can successfully be done.) But I won't miss out on it, that is for sure!!! I learned a lot over 3 years. I want stronger bones. My friends are all fracturing and breaking theirs.

@loriesco sounds like the best way to take Reclast is to slow down the infusion to 45 minutes, maybe reduce it—and to pre-hydrate and to pre-medicate….similar to how better to deal with chemo……i recently went through dealing with CRC ,and am just getting enough energy to exercise meaningfully….will choose an OP med (i have moderate OP) a little later…learning a lot from this site….thanks everyone !

Hopefully you continue to feel better! It has been over 18 months and I continue having pain in both arms, shoulders and my left foot! I will not be getting another infusion!

Re: Reclast infusion
I had the infusion eleven months ago and have not felt anywhere near well since. I understand it’s great for all ages and most people have no after effects. Unfortunately I am affected.
I’m pushing myself to go to the gym. Hopefully my strength will return and I can become stronger and feel better. That’s my goal.

@kimmer1234 this is my goal as well! It’s been 19 months! Some symptoms have improved where others have not! I go to Physical Therapy bi-weekly and really try to stay as busy as I can so the aches and pains do not take over my body. I did not and will not receive any further treatment!

I had my first and last infusion on Jan 22nd. I am still having side effects. The worst of which is the trouble swallowing and indigestion and burping. For those that had the same how long did it take to go away and what did you take for it? I also still have some sporadic tingling in my face and legs.

Please advise.

The research shows that less than 1/10 of a percent have a reaction to their first Reclast. The research also shows that the second time around it is 1/100 of a percent. There are many ways to cut down on the reaction and so if you haven’t had your first injection or you were worried about your second, you should talk to your healthcare provider or do your own research and then present it to your healthcare provider.

@loriesco Mind if I ask the source of this? The Reclast side effect section indicate flu-like symptoms in 40% of people, joint pain in 24% and headache in 12%. That seems like a lot more than 1/10 of a percent.

Has anyone had TSH issues after Reclast infusion. I had my first infusion this past Sept. No immediate flu like reactions. But my TSH has been all over the place since then. Background: I had thyroid removed in 2006 due to papillary thyroid cancer caught very early. TSH has been pretty stable on synthroid with few changes. But since Oct. it has been up and down. Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem

@scottbeammeup I am a patient who had the infusion. When I went to my endocrinologist, she said it does happen and you may not get all the bad side effects but you may get more than flu like symptoms. Mine is gradually getting better this week - week 3. I still have the tingling sensation and the indigestion.
