Reclast reaction

Posted by bettyleigh @bettyleigh, 6 days ago

I had reclast two days ago. Yesterday I woke up with what felt like a mild case of the flu and progressed throughout the day to severe nausea, shakes and chills and bad headaches. Today is a bit better. Has anybody ever experienced this. I have not taken any other medication or infusions for osteoporosis.

There is a lot of wisdom and experience here about reclast as well as the other meds for op. Also, look at other subheadings under Osteoporosis.
In the meantime are you willing to share more about you....age, dexa scores, what kind of doc is seeing you for op. What is your understanding about reclast being prescribed for your first op med. Thanks and looking to hearing more.

Yes, I have annual Reclast infusions for osteoporosis. Feeling chilled, shaky, nauseous and having a bad headache are not uncommon. I had a similar reaction a day or two after my last infusion in October and thought I was getting the flu. It only lasted a day or two, then tapered off over the next day or so. I have had 4 infusions so far and was told by my doctor that Reclast is working well for me. You probably should report the reaction to your doctor for your record, but the reaction should be gone within a few days. I have tried oral bisphosphonates, but had a severe reaction to both Fosamax and Actonel. Reclast was suggested to me because it bypasses the digestive system, and believe me the reaction to Reclast is far milder than to the oral alternatives! There are other osteoporosis treatments, but the side effects can be far worse than this. I hope that your reaction to Reclast is over by now and that the medicine works well for you. Be sure you tell your dentist you are taking Reclast.

@gravity3 I was given reclast after forteo in 2 half doses for the year due to Hypophosphatasia. I was okay with this, but once off, my T scores worse than before I began any medication

Last year I had my first Reclast infusion and had flu like symptoms for 2 weeks. Needless to say, I was nervous about getting my second infusion last week. It’s been three days and so far so good. I was told the initial infusion is much harder for our systems then follow up infusions because we will already have had the medication in our system from last year, so it won’t be as much as a jolt to the system.

@marybrak I have heard that the Reclast infusion can be time extended, helps some people…also, some do pre and post meds to alleviate side effects. This med stays in the system for a long time, a factor to consider.

The research shows that less than 1/10 of a percent have a reaction to their first Reclast. The research also shows that the second time around it is 1/100 of a percent. There are many ways to cut down on the reaction and so if you haven’t had your first injection or you were worried about your second, you should talk to your healthcare provider or do your own research and then present it to your healthcare provider.

From drugs.com

"Very common (10% or more): Fever (44.2%), moniliasis (11.6%)
Common (1% to 10%): Nonspecific infections, asthenia, mucositis, chest pain, leg edema
Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Vertigo"

And that is just for 1 category of adverse reactions.

The drug manufacturer says it can be administered in 15 minutes. With the quick administration many patients have the flu symptoms. My first Reclass infusion was 45 minutes, no issues. Second infusion was 15 minutes. I had flu symptoms before I got home. I was sick for 3 days. Confirmed with doctor this was issue.

@loriesco unfortunately, what I have heard is the Reclast is one hard med…many people have lasting trouble from it…that said, glad if it works for some without rough side effects.

@nycmusic no pain no gain. My bones fell apart in cervical spine surgery. (which is where the side effects seemed to focus when I did the first infusion. I will deal with the side effects. I did the research. My infusion team failed me. Next time we will all be prepared. I won't be 3 weeks out from a double spine surgery, I will flush fluids, take an NSAID, and they will slow the infusion down - and maybe even do less. (Research proves this can successfully be done.) But I won't miss out on it, that is for sure!!! I learned a lot over 3 years. I want stronger bones. My friends are all fracturing and breaking theirs.
