Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time
I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

I have had 2 Reclast infusions in the last couple of years, now due for a 3rd one shortly. I tolerated them pretty well
My bone density results have not changed, osteoporosis of the spine, osteopenia everywhere else.
I have broken quite a few bones throughout the years , I have started taking calcium which are hard to swallow. I also have arthritis, needless to say always in pain😢
I had my first Reclast infusion two months ago. Lately I have been itchy, under arms and sides of feet. Tonight I woke up with itchiness expanding on feet and also itchy on spine and side of hand. Weird. I doubt very much it is due to Reclast but wonder if anyone else has had this at any point in treatment. I can't sleep!
After 2 Reclast infusions, are you saying your DEXA scores did not improve? What did your Dr say about that and did you get any recommendations on what to do next? Thanks.
It has not changed, but at least it is stable, hopefully my next infusion will do the trick 🙏
I have the same thing. What did you end up doing?
windyshores,
I am sorry that you are having this itch attack. I haven’t experienced that since my Reclast infusion. I hope it subsides fast.
did you get them all on the same machine same calibration? that might factor. If nothing works consider bioidentical hormones.
My reclast worked in six month to visually see denser bones on the XRAY. I have to start all over on the DEXA because of a new machine and software analysis at UCSD. The TBS (trabecular bone score software) is now being used.
I was put on Tymlos to alternately build bone density and slow down breakdown.
Hi, my name is Danny, had my first and Last Reclast infusion in June 2024. I had back issues prior to going. Well, a few days after the infusion both shoulders, forearms are awful painful, more so upon waking up in the morning. As the day goes by the pain seems to lessen but the arms start to go numb; only to repeat the whole process the next night / day. I start physical therapy tomorrow and was filling out their questionnaire when I remembered this injection, looked it up and this is what I found! I do hope this eventually wears off because there are days I cannot lift my right shoulder at all. Thank you for allowing me to join and vent!
Danny, I’m so sorry you had these side effects. I did Reclast in April because my bones are so soft and I needed surgery for a very compressed spine. I had the surgery October 4 praise God! I did not have side effects from the Reclast (that I know of), a little achey once in a while. In my latest Dexa, I did show significant statistical improvement in bone density, although the surgeon said they were still soft. This probably isn’t much help to you, but wanted to encourage you if I could, and let you know someone out here hears you, and cares.
I am glad it is working for you! It is always a good feeling when one feels well to start out your day. I meet with a PT person today for the first time and he seems to think my issue is from the Reclast infusion. Hopefully his PT instructions work for me; I am woken multiple times throughout the night with very painful arm and shoulders. I am also experiencing nausea feeling upon getting up; manageable nonetheless. I am not sure if I’ll have another infusion next year or not. I’ve been trying everything for the pain since June, hopefully the exercise does the trick.
