Recent elevated resting pulse cause and concern

Posted by ronco56 @ronco56, 2 days ago

My twice daily recent blood pressure/pulse readings show my bp as good but my resting pulse had elevated to between ~85-103 bpm. Just several weeks prior my resting pulse was ~75-90 bpm. I recently adjusted my metoprolol succinate dosing from 100mg 2x/day to 100mg 1x/day. The increase in pulse began a day after my change in dosing. I have noticed a tightness in my left chest too. I have an ICD implant and don't know if it's related. My recent interogation reflected no (0) arryhmia's or flutters. Minimal pvc's and pac's. My EP reviewed my ecg and said it looked fine.

As long as it is conclusively NSR and not a tachyarrhythmia, you should be okay, and my guess is that it's just your heart wondering where the other 'cookie' is. Each drug has an effect on the body that the body attempts to counteract to the extent possible with its own adjustments. You went from a high dose to a much lower dose, one half to be exact, and your heart, I believe, has reacted with a 'runaway' heart rate that is no longer being regulated by the previous dose of metoprolol. If you monitor carefully for the next ten days or so to ensure there really is no AF or SVT, you may find your rate subsiding back to its previous 'normal', and who knows, maybe even further.

Metoprolol slows your heart rate halving the dose has your body adjusting as gloaming so colorfully describes.
