Anyone feel swelling in frontal lobe after radiation? Memory issues?
Does anyone have any experiences from head/neck radiation after the first therapy treatment, of memory recall issues: past memory & immediate, and of a feeling of swelling INSIDE the forehead (no external swelling)?

I had a very big radiation field over my right face, head, neck, upper back after surgery for Stage II Parotid gland carcinoma.
I want to tell you that I went through so much at the beginning of my treatment; it was like a combination of anxiety, fear, trying to be calm! Its' a big worry of unknowns. So as long as you are honest with your doctor about this memory loss, and they know your personal health history, here's what could happen with memory:
It's a big freak out on many levels and you could be overwhelmed and not remembering like usual.
the treatments are cumulative. I can't imagine how you could feel different from one treatment. They don't work together until you are finished completely. That's what I was told. Having a big reaction from one treatment sounds rare. Again, check in with your oncologist.
Our brains are held within our skulls. The feeling of swelling is one thing, and can be what I mention above. It is freakin scary to get the treatments. But there cannot be external swelling , unless you've had surgery that removed part of your skull.
I hope you can get some support. I know I needed it but wasnt' taken seriously. I was an RN when I got cancer. Maybe everyone assumed I didn't need any support. But it would have been a lot smoother healing process if someone had understood how scared I was. I was 34 yrs old.
I hope you check back in on these posts. Take care and slow things down in life right now. You need peace and calm...promise me!

1 ReactionI can't say I had any feelings at all after the first radiation treatment or the first few weeks for that matter. It was only later on that I realized I had some memory loss, and not sure which memories until I tried to recall certain things I knew from work or friend's names. It is a bit scary. Will I understand what a Stop Sign means? Will I recognize my cousin? I guess you don't know what you don't know.
We don't have much choice in the matter. Life goes on and we learn to deal with what is left of us after treatments. Worry never seemed to help at all nor did it change any outcome. It only added to the anxiety. Courage.

2 ReactionsI'm a 76 year old woman and have had 2 doses of radiation. one on my forehead near hairline 20x and one over my left ear 20x. I guess I did ok. I do think there's some mental acuity lost but not too bad. Some fatigue which I prop up with coffee but also could be age related. Last one was over a year ago.
