Question on growing kidney cyst

Posted by chrischris595 @chrischris595, Feb 17, 2023

Can someone tell me what would happen should a kidney cyst burst? I’ve had one for several years and at some point nephrologist quit following me. But for past 3 years I’ve been seeing an oncologist for another condition. Every year I have a PET scan from oncology. It has shown a kidney cyst growing, now to 7.2cm. Oncologist and Radiologist are concerned. Urologist isn’t concerned. Worried.

Please see a nephrologist.
Maybe the oncologist can refer you to one and give the nephrologist a call and also request an appointment immediately.
I don't understand why patients have to work so hard to get appointments and follow-ups ASAP.
God Luck to you.

@chrischris595 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I agree that your medical team is concerned, from the oncologist and radiologist. Ask each of them for the name of a urologist the recommend, and push for an appointment as soon as possible. Take copies of reports, even though the new urologist may want to repeat some screening tests.

I had what was thought to be a renal tumor, but as we watched and waited for things, the urologist I consulted determined it was a cyst due to the nature of its presence. So, now I am just knowing it is there, and not too worried at the moment.

True that! Thanks for replying. It took me 1 1/2 yrs. to get into see my current Urologist because of recurrent antibiotic resistant bladder infections. I’ve known about the cyst for many years. It’s just recently grown, 4.2 cm to 7.2 cm within 3 years. Urologist says it’s nothing to worry about. He received a phone call from my Oncologist and has now scheduled me for another appt. IDK. He’s pretty cold and uncaring IMO.

Thank you for replying. I’ve just been scheduled with urologist after my oncologist called him. This is a new urologist to me and the verdict is still out as to whether I will be seeking a different one. It took forever to get an appt. for recurring complex bladder infections. He saw my cyst on a renal ultrasound his office performed. Barely commented on it. I wasn’t impressed with him. I’ve already decided that should he now request surgery or a procedure, I am seeking a 2nd opinion at a University Medical Center, but that means 3-4 hr. drive.

Sorry about your cyst!
