Question about DEXA Scan inaccuracy

Posted by shorty321 @shorty321, Mar 20 6:29am

If I am 5 ft, 100 lbs, and small boned, is it possible that I don’t have osteoporosis even though my DEXA Scan shows a T-score of -4 in my spine? I had one round of Evenity shots so far. After the DEXA Scan, I had a 24 hour urine test which showed that I was excreting too much calcium in my urine. After adding k2 and magnesium, my test result was at the highest end of normal.

one thing that can be missed is the fact that a high sodium intake increases urine sodium which increases urine calcium excretion. Use of electrolyte solutions and certain foods ( restaurants!!) can be sneaky sources of sodium.

@daylemaples Excellent point. I have tracked my diet for years to ensure I was getting enough calcium and I went back and reviewed my sodium intake. I was shocked to see that I was consuming way more than the recommended amount even with a healthy diet. Now that I have found out that I have hypercalciuria I have eliminated a few sources of sodium that were contributing to my high intake.

@shorty321 Sounds like you have a great doctor. My only suggestion is to make sure you take Vitamin K2 along with your calcium supplements since it helps direct the calcium to the bones.

I used to take 45mcg Vitamin K2 with my calcium, but have increased the form and dose based on this article, and others that I've read: https://drkumardiscovery.com/posts/vitamin-k2-mk7-bone-strength-review/

I found two K2 MK7 supplements on Amazon and ordered both. Not sure which one I'll stick with, I'm alternating them now. One is Sports Research Vitamin K2 MK7 180mcg with Coconut Oil. It sources its K2 as Menaquinone-7 (MK7) from fermented chickpeas rather than from MenaQ7, which is a specific branded form. This is a gel capsule with liquid contents.
The other supplement is from True Vantage and contains 180mcg of that vitamin as "MenaQ7".
I read that "MenaQ7" supplements are considered superior because "they contain a highly purified form of vitamin K2 as MK-7, which has been clinically validated for its benefits in supporting bone and cardiovascular health. Their production process ensures a high concentration of the bioactive all-trans form, making them more effective than other vitamin K2 supplements." This is in a capsule form with powdered contents. The TrueVantage brand that I ordered with MenaQ7 is made in the U.S. and 3rd party tested.

Good luck.

@daisy17
You have decided to take MK7 rather than Mk4 or a combination?
I am leaning towards a hybrid method using both MK7 and Mk4, but I am still reading and looking at the research so very interested in your thought process.

MK4 and MK7 are the same thing. AI Assist says this about the difference between MK4 and MK7: "MK4 and MK7 are two forms of vitamin K2 that differ primarily in their half-lives and sources; MK4 has a shorter half-life and is found in animal products, while MK7 has a longer half-life and is derived from fermented foods like natto. This means MK7 can be taken in smaller doses less frequently compared to MK4, which requires more frequent dosing for effectiveness."

The osteoporosis studies I read recommended MenaQ7 as the form of K2.

@daisy17 my husband also excreted excessive calcium in his urine. It was checked after he had a compression fracture. Other tests were normal. He was placed on hydrochlorothiazide (a mild diuretic) and his urine calcium has normalized. Hope this may be helpful to you.

@crbarefoot In addition to my high blood calcium levels, I also have high parathyroid hormone levels which indicate that one of my parathyroid glands is overactive. Several CT scans found a tumor (benign adenoma) on one of my glands as the cause, but I'm not a candidate for surgery for several reasons I won't get into, so my dr is monitoring me for now.

@daisy17, I was taking d3, k2, and magnesium with calcium citrate. Then recently, I read that magnesium and calcium should not be taken together since they both compete for absorption in the gut.

@shorty321 I read the same thing so take them separately. Thanks for pointing this out.

following...
I am 5'1 (lost an inch last few years, will be 70) just beginning this journey. I speak to endocrinologist in June.
The drug suggested (Forteo) will cost me over $1,500/month (my co-pay)
The other drug (Evenity) has side effects that scare me. Is there anyone who has built bone with
exercise & nutrition? (or is that a dream?)
