What supplements help Osteopenia, Osteoporosis?

Posted by grace1215 @grace1215, Feb 4, 2020

Hi, I am a new member here and wanted to find out if anyone has used AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Citrate for Osteopenia? I have had this condition for 10 years now plus five years with Osteoarthritis of the hip which I am hoping will help not only my hip but the DEXA scan came up with Osteopenia scores.

What collagen brand do you take?

Ostinol 450. Go directly to their website and read all the information. My integrative medicine doctor highly recommended this I wouldn’t trust Amazon for this. Let me know what you think. Nina

I am trying to get all the right vitamins. Could you tell me if you take boron separately and what dosage? Also, what do you take for a multivitamin? I take everything you mention and I’m looking for a decent multivitamin. Also considering adding curcumin or grape seed extract. Thanks so much for sharing information.

I take one of the AOR supplements, that my Naturalpathic Doctor recommended. It is like a multivitamin for Bone health. This does include boron. Try to eat more root veggies as they are rich in boron. I have had great success with curcumin. Purica here in Canada has some great products.

I alternate my calcium between Citracal calcium citrate and New Chapter algae sourced calcium. Citracal has no vitamin K while New Chapter contains 45mcg of K2. (It also contains K3 but I couldn't find supplements of that.). To supplement K2 when I take Citracal, I take Solaray K2 which has 50mcg; this brand is highly rated on Amazon.

Have your DEXA's stayed the same during the 3. years on Fosamax? If you won't gain bone density, what is the benefit to taking Fosamax? Did they say why you won't gain density? My Dr explained that because old bone isn't sloughed off while on Fosamax, that is what shows the gains in bone density on DEXA.

Their goal is “to get my T score to -2.5 or higher. There is essentially no chance that this is going to happen with alendronate alone.”….
..”A step by step approach to treatment given the severity of your bone density.”
Then goes on to explain med options, depending on insurance,.. exercise

My scores have not improved over the 3 years. I see no benefit of staying the course especially if there’s options that appear to build it. I haven’t had a break yet. But, am concerned as I am certainly at risk for this

Not sure I understand the sloughed off that your Dr is talking about

Hi Daisy,
What are the hormone replacement pellets you are taking and also for Boron , what brand would you recommend? Did you get the hormone replacement pellets through your GP ?
I just came from seeing my GP and it's sad how very little they know about osteoporosis.
He would not refer me to see a gastroenterologist and told me to Just take the Prolia because it would repair all my fracture and make me 100%.
His best advise was stay healthy.......
When I mentioned Forteo or Tymlos he asked me what they were for.
Like you , I don't want to take any meds and will do this with the help of this great site and Dr's that have actual knowledge about this issue.

I think you directed your comments to me by mistake because I don't take hormone replacements or the other things you mention.
