Proton therapy close to outside of the esophagus discomfort

Posted by benz76 @benz76, Feb 4 9:55am

Could use some help! Anyone had or. is having proton therapy next to the esophagus? I just finished #15 series and oh my. Constant discomfort, hoarse, and difficultly finding anything to ease the discomfort. Any information on what you did or are doing will be greatly appreciated. I know soft foods but I'm looking at 15 more. treatments plus the healing time. I believe this would mean more intensity of discomfort. It feels like the worst elongated sore throat I've ever had. Thanks for any information you might offer.

Hi @benz76, That sounds so painful. I'm including a link to a different general lung radiation discussion in case you haven't seen that: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/radiation-treatment-on-lul/
One member (@vlpr) had radiation that impacted the esophagus and mentioned numbing medication. I'm not sure if something similar may be an option for you.
Also, from the esophageal cancer group: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/just-advised-that-my-79-year-old-dad-has-esophageal-cancer-a/
Don, @dsh33782, may have some suggestions.
Has your doctor given you any feedback on how to manage the side effects?

During radiation and chemo, the side affects included being tired all the time, caughing up flem, loss of appitite, and some diaherra. I got some medication for the diaherra, and the caughing slowed down as the treatment worked. I was on a feeding tube for weeks taking 6 ISOSOURCE canisters per day to get nurishment. I'd be happy to answer questions you may have about these side affects.

I had a similar experience- Aloe Vera juice helped a little as did Melaleuca Honey. How about liquid Sucralfate? Have you tried that?
This too shall pass-
I know how hard and uncomfortable it is sorry-
