Procedures for BPH
Can anyone direct me to any studies about the safety and efficacy of various procedures to shrink the prostate? My husband is 84 years old and has developed a diverticulum on his bladder. The theory is that this is due to his extremely large prostate. He is reluctant to take oral medications for this issue due to possible side effects. We would appreciate any information about available procedures. Thank you.

Hello @detc, Sorry that you have not received any responses to your question. I also have BPH and have been on Tamsulosin for more than 10 years. I'm currently 81 and was thinking about the different options that are available but I am a little reluctant on surgery. There are quite a few different discussions and comments from members on procedures for BPH. Here's a link to the list of comments and discussions if you want to scan through them - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/?search=Procedures%20for%20BPH.
Mayo Clinic also has a list of the different treatments along with other information here - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/benign-prostatic-hyperplasia/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20370093.
Here is some information from 2023 on the management of BPH.

Has your husband discussed any of the minimally invasive options that are available with his doctor?
Thank you for responding to my question, John. My husband is scheduled for a cystoscopy later this month. We will try to discuss options with the doctor at that time. We just wanted to go in with as much information as possible. He’s going to look into the sites you provided. It may come down to consideration of my husband’s medical issues, age and prostate size.
We sincerely appreciate the time you took to share that information with us.
