Has anyone fought Polymyalgia without prednisone successfully?

Posted by ddonnagirl1 @ddonnagirl1, Apr 16 9:00am

I have been on Prednisone for almost two years. I started at 60mg and just now dropped to 2.5. My body is so sore at this point but not like the initial diagnosis. My blood markers have always been normal. My Rheumatologist insists that my Polymyalgia is in remission. She wants me off Prednisone ASAP. My question is has anyone else experienced joint pain and muscle aches and just rode it out. Does the pain finally go away. Is it the adrenal glands struggling to come back. Has anyone fought Polymyalgia without prednisone successfully? Thanks 😊

@pacarolyn, @barbsnow, @floridabonnie and others may have some experience to share with you. I did experience morning stiffness and some pain during my two times with PMR while I was tapering off. I normally just rode it out if it was less than 2 on my pain scale. It was easier to taper off my second time around mainly because I made some lifestyle changes and incorporated more exercise and stretching into my daily routine along with better eating habits.

Have you tried making any lifestyle changes to help?

Yes I do Pilates 3-4 times a week and walk a couple miles with the dog 2 days a week. I’ve always eaten fairly healthy although all of a sudden I find myself craving sweets, which is new to me!

In March I finally got to see a rheumatologist and he told me that taking predisone for less than a year is necessary to keep it from quickly coming back. So I started with 10 and am now down to 8. But I have embraced better eating habits. I was already gluten free, but I now eat nothing with sugar added except very dark chocolate (83 or 97%), which I have come to prefer. As to exercise.... I still need to make myself do that. Thanks for the push!

I have. I used celebrex for about 3 months, until I developed the celebrex rash, stopped the celebrex and improvement was almost immediate. Don't ask me why. It started to path to better control without any meds.

Hi all. I am off prednisone now for 15 weeks and off Kevzara since mid February. A little stiff when I get up but moving around I loosen up. Just a Tylenol as needed. I was on tapering doses of prednisone just short of a year from being diagnosed.
Good luck

I agree that diet can make a significant difference. I'm a registered dietitian and had a very mild case (only hurt while laying in bed) and managed to taper off in about a year. I started with 10 mg. I eat a primarily an organic, whole foods, plant-based diet with small amounts of animal protein. I focus on anti-inflammatory foods. I also exercise 6 days a week (swimming, pilates, dance). For more information, you can find more of my comments in other threads.

Wow!!! Lucky you. How long had you had PMR before that happened?

How did you do with side effects on the 10 and on the 8? Anxiety, physical bodily changes, BP, osteoporosis?

So glad you are doing well.

Good for you for getting off the pred so quickly. There is hope I guess. That's awesome and may you never have to deal with PMR again.
