Prednisone and Wegovy (or other weight loss medication)

Posted by lni888 @lni888, Feb 13 11:01am

Has anyone taken prednisone along with a weight loss medication like Wegovy? Before I started my autoimmune disease journey in October, my doctor prescribed Wegovy. I couldn’t find it anywhere at the time. After I started prednisone, I was concerned about adding any other new medicines. Plus, I read that prednisone may interfere with blood glucose control and reduce the effectiveness of weight loss medication. Now that it’s February and I’m still on prednisone and still struggling with my weight, I want to revisit taking Wegovy. Anyone have success with Wegovy (or another weight loss medication) while on prednisone?

Hello-
I have been on a low dose of prednisone (5mg) for 5 years now for my autoimmune disorder. I started Wagovy injections for weight loss 3 years ago and switched to Zepbound about a year ago. In 3 years I have lost 31 pounds and I could loose even more if I exercised!

Thank you for sharing your experience and congratulations on the weight loss. Any reason for switching to Zepbound?

I too am struggling on prednisone and weight gain, let alone weight loss ... I have addison's disease so I am on steroids for life. However sometimes it is increased when I go through an RA flare ... all bets are off on that one with weight gain. The one positive thing I stick with is my yoga ... that saves my sanity at times when I become overwhelmed with all the health issues I have.

Thank you for sharing. It’s good you stick with your yoga.

My husband was on Semaglutide before beginning prednisone and had lost 25 pounds. Enter Steroids, weight back. Still staying on the weight loss injections because we know that he would have gained more and still may. We have been here before without a weight loss drug and the weight gain was significant (40 lbs), so we are staying on both. They have not interfered with each other. But was hoping the weight gain would be slower. Go for it if your doc says it’s okay. Might save you from gaining another 20lbs.

Thank you for sharing your husband’s experience. As much as I would love to lose weight, I’d be okay with not gaining more. My regular doctor who initially prescribed the Wegovy before I stated prednisone is on maternity leave and no other doctor wants to commit to saying it’s okay to go on it now.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Were you on prednisone while taking the Ozempic or Mounjaro?

Thought it might help to add that I’m currently on 20mg prednisone. Whenever I try to go below 20mg, headaches come back. Next step may be adding Actemra to help taper down on prednisone. Another reason I hesitate to add another medication (Wegovy) to the list. I’d feel better knowing other people have with no problem, but I feel like there isn’t a lot of info on it, at least none I can find.

Both! I’m on a prednisone taper.
