Prednisone and change in hair texture
I’ve been on various doe3s of Prednisone over the past one and a half years. Just recently my hair has started becoming frizzy and I’m wondering if it could be caused by prednisone. Anyone else have this experience?

I also lost a significant amount of hair during the taper. Came out in horrifying handfuls. I've now been off pred isone for almost 4 months and I have 1 1/2 to 2 inch new growth sticking up all over. Could look better but at least it’s a hopeful sign!

1 ReactionPrednisone can definitely effect your hair. My thick wavy, frizzy coarse hair has thinned out and each strand is fine now. Fortunately I have a lot of hair so not noticeable to anyone but me and my hairdresser. With the prednisone dose reduction from 15 mg last Sept/2025 & down to 2 mg daily now, the hair loss has substantially lessened and new hair is growing in.
My frizzy hair is driving me crazy. I have tried too many products and nothing works. I had not thought about prednisone being the cause. I have been on prednisone for 18 months. During that time my hair has been frizzy in the summer and thin in the winter. All of this is new but I am older and my hair more grey. I would like to think it will go back to normal after prednisone. I would also like to believe my time taking prednisone is temporary.
I began daily 10 mg Pred early Oct.2025 for PMR. The dose increased to 40mgwith my diagnosis of GCA at the end of February. I began to have hair loss in April/May this year. Despite being now tapered to 3 mg, the hair loss has not slowed. I also have developed 'thin skin' that easily bruises, especially with happy puppy claws! Along with besmith57, I have developed dark undereye circles that I've never had. I now have a collection of concealers!
I cannot imagine how bad these changes would be without my healthy diet, 1,000 mg daily Vit. C, Hyaluronic acid supplements and Vit. C serum for my face.
