PPI impact on calcium
Hello, I am 6 months into Evenity. My GI feels very strongly that I need a several month course of omeprazole (Prilosec) for GERD. I do have severe throat reflux, have had for years, and tried not to take PPI. But, the GERD has become severe. I am concerned b/c PPIs can block calcium absorption, which would be very concerning while on Evenity. Has anyone had this issue? Thank you.

I have same issue, although I am on Reclast. I developed GERD from Fosamax. Stopped that and had 2nd Reclast infusion a month ago. On PPIs-Omeprazole since 8/2024 after being on Famotidine (aka Pepcid) for several months which was not as effective.. I get my Calcium through food and so far my Calcium levels have been fine. I am hoping to try Famotidine again when I see my GI in May as it is supposedly safer for long term.
Best to you!

1 ReactionHi @aspirecreative,
I developed GERD after Tymlos, more likely because of the painful adverse reactions and subsequent overuse of pain relievers and what they did to my body. I also have a probable sliding hiatal hernia. So, my doc prescribed Omeprazole which didn’t quite get it. He then prescribed Carafate which was short term and very effective. If the need would arise, I can take Omeprazole for a few days or a couple Tums and it seems to keep the acid at bay.
I also lost some weight and began eating smaller meals, fewer spicy foods and haven’t had any bouts with the evil GERD in about 6 months. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I do still drink coffee but I’ve reined it in to about 2 cups a day.
‘Tis a good feeling, indeed, to not add to my OP woes with the use of PPI’s. Our poor little bones need all the help they can get!
I’m sorry GERD has added to your woes and wish you the best in your quest for a healthy gut and healthy bones!
Cheers!
