Post-Nissen Fundoplication Problems: What helps?

Posted by nirolk @nirolk, Apr 29, 2018

I had a nissen wrap operation in 1999. I still have problems at night after about 4 hours of sleep. I've tried all kinds of drugs to help relieve the gas. Right now I am on 40 mg of pantoprazole in the morning before breakfast. Most of the time days are fine. I have problems being regular on bowl movements, so I have a high amt of gas from the meds I take to go number 2. At night is when I have real problems. Any kindred spirits out there?

I have had nothing but problems after my surgery. Not wanting to eat, never hungry and when I do eat my stomach hurts and feels like I have so much air. So painful and I have had swallow study and another scope. What is happening

@linseymorgan1 .. I have written many times about developing postoperative gastropanesis.. I had A Nissan at local Iowa hospital.. I struggled for 2 months. .losing 50 pounds ..before going to Mayo MN to get diagnosed with 3 tests in 1 day.. GI doc there said 1 out of every 6 Nissen fun. Fails.. Mayo gave me a way to cope.. but there is no fix.. generally nerves around stomach have been damaged.. they do not regenerate.. every meal is a challenge.. for 7 years.. look back at other written hints of how to eat.. what to eat.. keep a log of what works.. if you have nerve damage... the Nissen can't be undone.. but you need to get experienced competent help..

i am sorry you have had a rough time. i had the nissen done a few years ago. i had similar symptoms for quite a while post op. the surgeon explained that can happen due to manipulation of the stomach. in talking to my gastro doctor, he felt i had developed gastroparesis. i take reglan to improve stomach motility and use zofran for nausea.

I take zofran on a regular. I’m 8 months out and it scares me that I am never hungry and when i do eat it so little and then bam, stomach pains start. I’m losing weight, extremely exhausted, while working during all this. Sometimes I feel the VA doesn’t care.

Totally agree with the experience help. Im losing weight, to much. Sucks I have to force myself to eat and when I do eat, it’s only like 4-5 Oz. I have to stay on the VA to push for help cause I really don’t think they care but I have no other choice but to use the VA.

Hello, I'm almost three weeks after nissen fundoplication and hiatal hernia repair and still continue burping a lot, still have pain in the left side of my stomach under the ribs, sometimes I feel like acid in my throat, no difficulty swallowing, but even though my surgeon says it's normal, I still don't know how normal it is. Anyone had this experience?

Do you have these symptoms during the day while active or more at night when reclining or sleeping?

yes, I had a very similar experience, the pain under the ribs does not sound normal, left side, went back to the surgeon who said everything was normal, but it wasn't. Two years later, I finally found a couple of surgeons that are figuring out what the first surgeon ignored.
