How to address PMR pain while decreasing prednisone

Posted by barbararene @barbararene, Feb 13, 2017

I have been diagnosed w poly myalgia rheumatica (pmr). Am taking 5 mg of predisone, was taking 10mg.
Every time I go on a low dose, symptoms come back. I can't take pain meds, but do drink wine to ease pain, although I'm told no alcohol w prednisone. Anything you can share as far as info

Methylsulfonylmethane. It is a dietary suppliment that provides sulfur which is necessry to many aspects of our body. It is an anti-inflamatory that is good for osteoarteritis, and excercise inflamation. I have used it for years for dogs and horses and have been using for myself for many months. Best of all, it seems to have no toxic dose and is side effect free. There is much on the web about it so do your own research.

What I do not understand about taking MSN is if it supports and modulates the immune response, how is this helpful if I am taking prednisone to suppress my overactive immune system? (Since I am a new member , I cannot post links to the research, but The National Library of Medicine has a study from 2017 explaining how MSN works -the biochemistry is beyond my understanding.)

What ever MSM is I had a similar experience yesterday while on my 2nd wk of tapering with LDN (Low dose Naltrexone) down from 20-17.5 the first wk .This wk tapering down from 17.5-15 ml prednisone but I forgot to take the LDN of 4.5at 9:00am with the prednisone. Later in the afternoon-loopydizzy feelings came back, ringing in the ears and mild neck pain came. Then I remembered I forgot the LDN. Today seems like we are back on track.

I have read the article and do understand most of it (I have a public health mycrobiologist background) and I would boil this down to MSM good for what ails us. I am gratified that the studies are catching up to what I have seen in my use with horses and dogs. Even is all you have is osteoarteritis (and who doesn't?), it is a good idea. It doesn't stimulate the immune system in a way that makes our condition worse. Thanks for finding that article. BTW: Anything that down regulates IL6 has got to help us as it seems to be one of cytokines that we make too much of.

PubMed had an article on a very provocative study that was small, yet significant: They rounded up people with PMR who were on steroids (and responded to them) and followed them. All those that relapsed, they tested their blood to see what was different than the people that stayed ok. The all had an increase in interlukin 6 in the relapse group. Sure makes it look like it is implicated in a flair. Since MSM helps "down regulate" IL6 seems worth a shot. Good luck!
